Today we arrive in Uluru, check into our Budget room, of one full bed and two twin bunks. The first thing I noticed here was it was a very dry heat compared to Cairns. The second thing is when we got to the hotel, there was an aroma in the air that smelled like heated euculyptus. It was really neat. We managed to book a couple of tours in addition to our Sounds of Silence Dinner tonight.
We met Rhonda from Perth at the Tour Desk. She and her nephew Lyndon were attending a Dot Painting workshop in the afternoon, which we thought would be fun to take as well, and then going on Sounds of Silence tonight.
The Dot painting was four of us, one Aussie translater, and Elsie, an Aboriginal woman who explained meanings of shapes and told us some stories of Uluru. After about an hour of talking, we got to try our own little dot paintings with mixed success. Then back for a shower and clean up for our trip out into the dessert tonight.
The picture here is much closer than we were, but we had a lovely view of both KataTjuta and Uluru for the setting sun. We had unlimited drinks, kangaroo and crocodile canapes and great veiws.
For dinner we moved down to the tables and sat with 3 British couples, two traveling together, and the 3rd, Mickey and Fie on their honeymoon. All were very entertaining, but Sharon and Mickey, whose last name was Rooney, in particular hit it off.
When they turned out all the camp lights and the table candles, we were treated to the most magnificent sky I've ever seen. It was too early for the Southern Cross, but still damed beautiful.
Early to bed for a 4 a.m. wake up call for a sunrise over Uluru and hike of the Valley of the Winds at Kata Tjuta.
