Ok, so I'm late in making this entry, and the picture is of Alcatraz not LAX (Lost Angeles International Airport). Let me tell you, I HATED LAX. I will do everything in my scope of abilities to avoid this place. It was old, dirty and yes, I'm spoiled by MacNamara in Detroit.
Let me back up a bit. Tuesday, December 11 was a comedy of errors. All the little things were going wrong, from a project I was working on, to banking, to the new Ipod I bought for the trip. But the gods finally took pity on my sanity and at the last minute, everything started to fall into place. A big shout out to my mom and dad who were more help with merely their presence in the morning, let alone assistance, than they will ever know. I love you mom and dad. (Give Bud a kiss for me)
The flight from D-town to the city of Angels was good. I have one comment for my fellow passengers. Please use basic hygiene when traveling on flying sardine cans. I was slightly mollified however with the discovery that Northwest serves Canada Dry Ginger Ale. I know this is sacreligious coming from a Michigan native. But hey, I make up for it with my love of Faygo (particularly RedPop.)
At one point I was looking out the window and was curious about the lights I saw in the shadows of the mountains. I wondered how many people lived around those tiny lights and how isolated they were with the recent snow storms. I was terribly lucky to miss the mad weather on the trip out.
I made it a point to stay awake as long as I could to help me adjust to the time change in Australia. So by the time I arrived, it was 9:30 p.m. and I had been up for more than 12 hours. My flight was scheduled to leave at midnight California time (or 4:00 a.m. Michigan time) As it was we were delayed as they had to remove a sick passenger. Evidenlty there is lots of paperwork involved with this process. I was lucky that I had an empty Seat between me and my neighbor which made stretching out to sleep much easier. We were provided with pillows, fresh blankets, socks, sleeping masks and earphones. The in flight entertainment is excellent. A choice of movies, tv shows and music. After a nice dinner of chicken and potatoes, I settled in to watch Live Free or Die Hard. For those of you who see the DVD version, check out the John McClain music homage. It is completely awesome, yes indeed - John McClain kicksass.
To be continued in part two.
