En-route to Cala'n Porter from the Port of Mahon we gave the dogs a well deserved toilet stop. Conveniently we parked up at end of the runway at Mahon airport, a poor excuse to fit in a little aircraft spotting!
Finally at 8AM on Wednesday 26th August, two and a 1/4 tanks of fuel later & 1153 miles clocked plus motorway tolls totalling at £86 we arrived in Cala' n Porter :) We promptly checked in to Siesta Mar apartments and luckily after contacting them last week to advise them of our early arrival our apartment was ready & waiting for us. We have been put in Siesta Mar 1 over the road, I think this was because of the dogs, as it's more quieter over there. We soon had the car emptied and unpacking commenced.
An hour later we were out, and headed to Pito's for breakfast. Upon arrival we were shocked to find that we were turned away because of the dogs by a not so friendly waitress! It's high season in Cala' n Porter so there's a lot of temporary staff on and we didn't recognise this particular waitress . We were sure that if Sylvia or Miguel were on it wouldn't have been a problem. We have been dining in Pito's for years and seen dogs in there in the past. We ended up in the English owned Village Pub. They didn't have a problem with the dogs accompanying us. We all had a typical Spanish Breakfast, English Sausage, English Bacon, Egg, Heinz Beans, Hash Brown and Pig Pudding! LoL, washed down with tea. We didn't even have time to finish the meal before Den & Lin ( Friends from the Aloha Bar )bumped into us. They confirmed about Pito's no longer accepting dogs as they too were turned away with their pup.
Afterwards we had a quick walk along The Cami De Cavalls ( a coastal path that goes all the way around the coast of Menorca ) to stretch the dogs legs and to walk of the breakfast. It was cut short though as the temperature was rising steadily. The owners of a local shop by the beach came out to fuss the dogs on our return and ended up giving water to the dogs. To finish off, there was a painstakingly climb of over 100 steps from the beach back up to the apartments.
Once back, sun cream was applied and we hit the pool, well the kids did! Whilst we sunbathed and the dogs rested in the room, glad to be out of the midday heat. The kids spent all day in the pool and on the pool slides at Siesta Mar II. I was also dragged on the pool slides after consuming a couple of pints. Thomas found it hilarious as a woman in her mid 40's also used the slides topless whilst been filmed by her kids! It was then back over the road to Siesta Mar 1, where we tried to teach Thomas how to dive without bending his legs. This was the first time in 30 years that I'd been in this particular pool. As these Apartments had been my first holiday abroad at the age of 8. Since then we have always stayed over the road or in a private villa.
After getting ready to go out for the evening we headed for Bar 007 with the dogs. Bar 007 has a very picturesque beer garden to sit out in. Upon the walk back to the apartments we passed Bar Pons, where another friend ( Harry ) was doing a warm up with his band for that nights entertainment.
We dropped the dogs off and went for dinner at Pito's, we think this is the best restaurant in Cala n porter, the food is plentiful, great value for money and just a fantastic choice. Even the desserts are fab, however out of the years we've been dining there I can count on one hand how many times we've had desserts, as the meals are so big. The elderly generation tend to have children's meals as they are more than sufficient. It was then back to Bar Pons to watch Harry and his band playing again with the dogs by our side.
We finished off in the No 1 bar in Cala n Poter, the Aloha Bar, where Manoli & Eduardo gave us a very warm welcome. We always turn up unannounced as we love to see their surprised faces upon arrival. Josh and Thomas's were plastered in kisses when Manoli managed to catch them. They are the loveliest Spanish couple we've ever met and I've known them for 30 years. They still have photos behind the bar of myself and Manoli from 30 years ago! There has been a tradition in the Aloha bar to give out Hawaiian necklaces to customers whilst receiving kisses from the waiting on staff or Manoli, even the dogs were given necklaces! We ended up having an early night, around 1am as Thomas was really struggling now to stay awake. The bill came to just 9 Euros !!! As most of the drinks were on the house! The dogs pulled us home, Vicky a little worse for wear! LOL!! :) xx
