Prep week in Gosport is finished. Halyards have been milked and moused, winches serviced, leaks sealed and a mountain of food packed.
I've been part of the victualing team this week, so have been shopping for Britain (I think I have a personal parking space at Asda) and helping to pack everything in to day bags so it's easy for the mothers to access and get meals ready on their days in the galley.
Each tin of food has had its label stripped and been marked, and each bag weighed so we can store efficiently on the boat. Weight is everything, so we've tried to source dried and vacuum packed as much as possible. Of course there is the rubbish conundrum as well so all excess packaging has been removed so we're not dragging that around the world with us.
Claire has put together a pretty tasty menu to give energy and variety and take account of dietary requirements. So on Leg 1 they will be enjoying such delights as Lamb tagine, Chickpea curry, Spaghetti Bolognaise, Rice salads and Smash and Beans! We will be baking bread every day and also a few cakes. I've sneaked in a little gift every day for each crew member so they have a little surprise to open. (Keep that a secret!) Each watch will have a snack bag per week of nuts, biscuits, sweets and the like to keep them motivated and fuelled up.
We've packed toilet rolls, shampoo, sudo crem, baby wipes, sun cream and 5 emergency bags in case of delays plus a rough weather contingency. In London we'll source all the fresh stuff and the last of the condiments and the dried milk. Then my lovelies it will be time to go! Let's hope we haven't forgotten anything!
Also this week a GREAT bbq took place including a small fire incident(!) and a magnificent cake (even if I do say so myself!) was enjoyed by all.
London and party time here we come!
