We decided to take a $70, 1 hr flight to Palawan I stead of the 12 hr ferry. It seemed more worth our money and time to get there in the same day and begin enjoying the islands and beaches.
So we flew on PhilippineAir and arrived into Puerto Princessa at 1230pm. We got our packs and walked outside into the plus 30 degree weather. Beyond the gates of the airport we flagged a tricycle. We knew we wanted to go to Honda bay to spend some time on the islands and snorkel. What we didn't know is that the boat tours stop at 230, and if ur not in a tour package then u need to share a boat... There's nobody at that time to share a boat with. We also didn't know that this bay was only 10 or 15 min away. We got the tricycle to go to the bus station against his advice... And sure enough, he waited for us with a smirk on his face as he saw us treading back down the dirt rock path. The San Jose terminal is for buses to Sabang, El nido.. Etc. it's where will be in a couple days once we begin northward.
So the driver took our packs once again and Fit them snugly onto the short shelf welded into his tricycle frame. Clipped them on a structure bar for support, and gestured for us to get ready. We sat cheek to cheek, on a seat that looked like it was for one. All the way to Honda bay please!
And so he rode on his dirt bike with us attached on the tricycle to Honda Bay. And we got here at 130ish... We quickly realized that we weren't gonna get snorkeling today, so well stay the night and go in the morning.
Sleeping at the Liberty Park lounge isn't all that bad. The building over hangs the water, like most dwellings here, and our room has a balcony that connects us to the washroom. Our room has a fan thats definitely working overtime at the moment. And Jobert, the young man that works here is always smiling and so helpful. We pay 350 php for a night about $10.
At firSt we were worrie that this place would be boring and sleepy... But contrary to that, the locals seem to bustle after 4 pm once they finished their tourism for the day.
We even made some new friends, Elgar and Bong, and enjoy sharing a 1litre bottle of Red Horse with one glass. It's what friends do.
Elgar took us to his friends place, where just in front a rooster was practicing his fight with another rooster. Elgar explained how right now they have little gloves on, that cover their deadly claw, and they will practice fight to see if they are in good shape for the real fight.
Where one c*** will win and one will die. The people like to watch and bet on the fights here, and Elgar says that he saw one man bet as high as 100,000 php.
Another friend, small an furry, intruded on our sleep one night!! The Ratscal!! Jumping on Meghan's arm and waking her up! So when we turned the light on, he struggled to squeeze his fat body under the door way.
The people are all very nice, and we have enjoyed our time off the beaten path in Honda Bay. We will next venture a bus trip north to Sabang.
