We hesitantly left Sabang fearing that our next destination would not be as lovely. We were to take a jeepney to "the junction" where a van would take us the rest of the 5 hour journey. After about an hour on the cramped jeepney we became hypervigilant about not missing the junction, and for good reason because no one said a word when we did stop at a fork in the road. The only thing that tipped us off was a sign for the van company. Upon entering the small store we were greeted by the Canadian friends we made in Sabang.
So the four of us made the winding, bumpy trip to El Nido in the express van, and by express I mean making multiple stops to jam people in. We were accompanied in the van by an older Filipino man who, to be frank, talked to much. We noticed this man drinking a beer at one of the stops and did not think much of it until later when we checked our food basket and realized it was our beer! Weirdo.
It started to pour rain shortly after reaching El Nido and we had two missions: get some cash as we were dangerously low, and find a place to sleep. I managed to find both almost accidentally. On my way to get some cash at the gas station, the only place to do so in town, I passed a barely noticeable sign for an available room. It was almost too perfect. It was a family room with air conditioning and an ensuite bathroom, with two double beds in two separate rooms.
El Nido was a nice little town aimed mostly toward tourism. Boat trip booths and scuba centers occupied most of the main drag. There were almost no people around when we arrived because they were all out on the water or in it. We settled down for a red horse for happy hour at one of the many restaurants on the strip of beach. We ate as the sun set and the many travelers came in from their day trips. We only spent one night in El Nido because we wanted to get to Coron for some diving and beaching, but from what our friends say it does warrant staying a couple days to take in some of the scenic lagoons and caves.
