Rode to Yaroslavl and stayed for two nights (included a rest day!) in a 'Friendship' house. Not very friendly (see earlier blogs). OK place though and I found a great liquor store where I bought a bottle of Yaroslovl Vodka that I had seen in the Vodka Museam earlier. It has a top with an onion dome on it. Cool. A lot of people in Yaroslavl speak English, as it is a large city with University, etc. The ride to Yaroslavl was over 100km, the 2nd longest of this tour. It had started out raining in Rybinsk - Vlad even put on rain gear after we got going when there was a break in the weather. Nice, steady, strong.... headwind. Yep. Couldn't be a tailwind. That would be too easy. There were a lot of cultivated fields though (they've been fallow). More traffic. Herbert, Benita and I pulled each other through the wind and stopped over the Volga to take pics on a huge bridge with so much traffic! We had a really tough time finding the Friendship House, but a young woman at an ATM knew where it was, gave us perfect directions and when she'd finished her transactions, DROVE by the obscure place to make sure we'd found it! WOW. That is so great. People everywhere in the world are amazingly helpful!
I am still covered in bites. Have I mentioned the flies (and the mosquitoes)?
Lovely dinner in Yaroslavl - Benita and Herbert left that night to head to St. Pete's and back to SA. Vlad told us that Russians do not tend to eat out except for birthdays and special occasions. Not like us Americans...
Rest day touring around Yaroslavl - monestaries, Russian outdoor shopping areas - very interesting stall-type set up. Sort of reminded me of Bankok stalls - one on top of the other, all vying for biz. Neat place.
