Ples - an 'artsy' town. Sorta 'Jerome-Like', only by the river... Pic is some of our fellow riders crossing the river with bikes on the speedboat (I was in the first group across). Crazy :D
Shortish, 40-miles ride today. First, there were some city tours of Kostroma by our guide, who was so cool. He LOVED his city and the area and his enthusiasm showed at every turn. We saw sections of the old city, from the river up to the higher ground. The old shopping malls, built hundreds of years ago - fish down by the river, meat a block up, and veggies next; then breads... very efficient in terms of health and set up for the villagers. Went next to the museum of wooden architechture - old peasant houses, churches, etc. Very interesting to see the differences in the poor, middle and upper class serfs. The upper class had beautiful houses with intricate carvings and designs.
I rode with Jan all day today - some beautiful rolling country, flowers, woods... It was really sparce traffic and ok road surface for the most part. The neat thing is that when I waved to the drivers, most of them waved back! Clearly off the beaten path - the Soviets hadn't gotten to them :D First time that's happened on this tour.
Stayed at a beautiful hotel on the river. Lots of art stalls along the pathway.
