We're in the middle of the desert pretending to be skateboarders. Wwwait a minute.... rewind!
We got into Hollywood on Wednesday night, checked into our Hostel and pretty much went straight to bed as it was 6am for us. Woke up early and headed straight out onto Melrose Ave to explore. Melrose, Santa Monica Blvd and Sunset Blvd are all parrallel to each other so we took pleasure in exporing all three. We walked for 5 hours until our feet hurt and we'd seen everything we wanted annd got our bearings of the area. That night we headed straight for sunset strip on the west end on sunset blvd. It's about 2 miles long with all sorts of bars, strip clubs, comedy clubs and venues including the viper room, cat club, rainbow room and the legendary whisky-a-go-go, which are all within spitting distance of one another.
We ended up going to the Whisky to catch some bands and soak up the atmosphere that had been shared by many famous bands including Motley Crue, Kiss and Van Halen. The hostle recommended drinking b4 you go out and they were right as two rum and cokes cost $16!!! It was the first legal drink Marie-Ann and I had bought in the USA so it was worth it but we made it last all night. Shame we couldn't afford more as the bands we watched were total tripe and it was really quite painfull watching them. Still it was fun to see some photos of famous rock stars on the walls pulling there ridiculous "aren't I cool' poses.
We spent the Friday getting Maz's watch fixed, hooking up my skateboard and then skating round Hollywood to see the famous farmers market and Beverly Centre. I bought a hat for $6 to keep the sun off my face. We definately getting more for our money here with regard to buying food and clothes.
Friday night we had dinner at the hostles cheep as chips diner and then got talked into going to a keg party where it cost just $5 for all the beer we could drink. It sounded fun but ended up being just the hostles basement, where a guy was dj-ing on a laptop and there was a keg in the corner. Still, we made the most of it and got our moneys worth.
Saturday we had to be out the hostle by 11am, our bus wasn't till 3pm so we stored our bags in a lock up and headed out to by some food supplies for our three weeks at Woodward West, the action sports summer camp we were working at.
We had lunch at Jonny Rockets, a retro American diner where you order burgers and milkshakes, whilst putting a dime in the duke box to play your favourite 50's classics. Yes, they included Johnny B. Goode, do wa diddy, and a Ventures song that I like but forget the title of. Got the bus up to tourist Hollywood where the train would take us to Union Station. On the way we caught some of the Stars on Hollywood BLVD and saw some people dressed up like, Capt Jack Sparrow, Davy Jones and Michael Myres. We arrived in plenty of time for our Bus and were all set to go start our lives as skateboarding campers...
