Hola Amigos!
This is going to be the final blog for South America as we are flying to New Zealand this afternoon. We have been in South America for almost four months now and had the most amazing time! It almost feels like we are going home this afternoon as we look forward to home comforts like milk, recognisable chocolate bars and fish and chips.
We have spent the majority our last week in South America on buses getting from Cusco, Peru down to Santiago, Chile in 6 days. This comprimised of two marathon bus journeys the first been ten hours on a coach and then an interesting border crossing in a chevolet with a random guy we arrived in Arica, a small city on the Chilean coast.
We spent a day on the beach and around half an hour in the sea until Charles was adiment he saw a shark and ran off back to the safety of land. I still doubt he actually saw a shark but oh well. We then settled down in one of the strangest hostels yet to watch a film before finding the nicest pizza takeaway in South America (a chain we would eat at three times within the next five days)!
The next day involved taking our longest bus journey yet down to Santiago, a massive 26 hour stint! Which was made worse by the shocking film selection which included the dutchess, a random set of South American soungs to an animated film, the most annoying old cheesy pop music mix from the eighties and the same South American film twice in a row. The only film which was any good was the tear jerking Boy in the stripped (striped) pyjamas which almost had the whole bus crying. However, the thing that made the trip most unpleasurable was across the isle from us. A disgusting women who could do the best farm yard animal noises I've ever heard. This did get slightly annoying and worrying at times.
By the time we arrived in Santiago we were ready to chill by the hostels pool and chill by the bar. It was one of the best hostels we have stayed at so far as it had seats for the bar inside the pool, a cricket net and lots of other essentials for a good hostel! We have spent the last two days making good use of these and hardly leaving the hostel apart from at night! We did have a good session in the cricket nets with two other English boys of which one was called Davie so it was almost like been back to garden cricket but without losing all the balls in the nettles and Davies' dubious umpiring decisions! Soon after the cricket we realised it was the first bit of sport we had done since the first week of the trip and just about every muscle in our bodies are aching. Which gave us further reason to spend time relaxing by the pool!
It feels sad to be leaving South America but on the other hand it will be nice to be back to an English speaking country!
Hope all is well back home!
Max
