Well now the run is over I had 2 days to see what I could in beijing.
The first thing that struck me is how clean, tidy and generally efficient things are. Outside of the blearing car horns it's a very modern city.
I decided not to do a tour with most of the group but rather headed out with another kiwi for the day. We had a great time seeing tiananmen square, Forbidden City, general Mao mausoleum and the national museum. And caught the local buses around for 20c each 5km journey. Seeing the sights were great but with the number of people around it was hard to stand still and take it all in. Security was also full on, body scans and luggage checks. I even had to drink some of my water to prove it was an explosive in the museum!
I've check out the Silk market. Man I hate shopping!!! Bargaining is full on with one shirt I got starting at 350 yuan and finishing at 40! You never can tell what's fair.
The two nights have been fun. One at Authentic Peking Duck restaurant and the other at the marathon runners gala dinner. The dinner was fun but the after party made the night. Downing mojitos at a roof top bar over looking Beijing was pretty cool. Getting in at 4am though made for a slow next day.
So off tomorrow I have had a awesome week here in china. I've made some cool friends who have included me in their group which was great for a loner. Thanks Auckland!
