Lake Matheson is so nice I'm going to see it twice. Today started out averagely but the clouds rolled away as we got to Fox, home of the Fox Glacier, to reveal the beautiful backdrop of Mounts Tasman and Cook. This was enhanced by the glassy lake showing the same backdrop upside down. About a hundred photos later I was a happy man and I set off later in the morning to the Fox Glacier lookout. As the two glaciers go, Franz Josef looks the more spectacular, but Fox gets little interest and as such is a nice place to lose yourself in the relative solace and wilderness.
I only have one complaint about the day. New Zealand lookout builders, can you please stop putting angled tops on the barriers of your lookouts? It makes it really bloody hard to put the camera on to get a still shot of the actual lookout. I'm not carrying a tripod for three hours each way just to compensate for your foolish design skills. Thankyouverymuch.
Update: I spent the rest of the evening in the hot tub drinking wine with some of the other hostel folks. Good times!
