So after the world's worst bus journey we find ourselves in Hoi An. It's a small town with a French-village-in-Provence sort of vibe. There's a lot of cafes and restaurants to sit around in and pass the time away. However, the town is really on the tourist route as it is the place for getting clothes made. There are over 500 tailors in a town the size of Tunbridge Wells.
Well it didn't take long before we plunged in and got measured. Leanne was first and chose a suit and a dress for work. She was measured in the middle of the shop and as the shop front opened straight up on to the main road there wasn't much dignity about it. She tells me that she is used to this sort of thing from years of getting measured for her costumes in TWODS but i still laughed like mad at some of the measurements taken. It was soon my turn, and karma played it's part, when in the shop i chose i was asked to remove my shirt in front of the girls who worked in the shop, before the very camp owner started measuring me. He then led me by the hand in to the back room where i was instructed to remove my shorts. This was looking like being one snug suit. We both needed a beer after that. We had to pop back a few times to try them on and for them to be slightly adjusted here and there, but overall we are both really happy with the outcome. My suit is incredible (it ought to be!!) and cost me 80 USD. Not bad really. Just need a job to go with it now!!!
We have done quite a bit of shopping here as the souvenirs are lovely and very cheap (if you are a family member reading this we bought you expensive stuff don't worry) but now it looks like we need to buy a bag to put it all in. Never thought i'd miss how easy it is going to Bluewater. Don't let Leanne read that last bit!!!
Next to our hotel is an amazing restaurant. The family who run it are very friendly and the food it possibly the best i've had so far. Main courses are between 60p and a pound and the local beer is 12p a glass. We are both very happy jus sitting there and we've eaten there a lot, apart from brekkie which is complimentary in our hotel. Lovely stuff.
We also spent one afternoon at a cooking school down the river amongst paddy fields. We learned how to make spring rolls, vietnamese shrimp pancakes and a host of other meals. It was brill. I lost quite a few man-points when it turns out that i was very good at food decoration (my cucumber fan was a marvel) but made up for it by helping to dock the boat back in Hoi An.
I'm sure i've left off a few things, but as these computers are very temperamental i'll leave it there for now. I'll tell you about the crazy things we've learned in Vietnam so far in a separate blog soon.
Home two weeks today!!! Cannot believe it.
