Our flight to Singapore from Perth was delayed for over an hour. We had to sit in our seats listening to David Gray sing Babylon on tape loop due to the fact someone had decided they were scared of flying and wanted to get off and go home. After this initial stumble we cruised in to Singapore enjoying very new films with very old wine. Our favourite combination.
Disembarking we were hit with the humidity which was unbelievable. Boxers go in to saunas before fighting to hit their target weight and this felt exactly the same. After a few steps I could feel all the weeks of bad living in Oz just evaporating, literally. We got the train to our hostel (yes you read that correctly, hostel, not hotel. We're slumming it baby!!) and when we saw our room we were a bit dejected. Location was incredible, but the lack of windows, dirty sheets and non locking door made us question our choice. However after turning the light on, getting some clean sheets and being shown how to use the door we felt a little happier and decided to give it a go. It was fine. Next day we'd planned to go on a boat cruise but someone had tried to commit suicide by jumping off one of the bridges and still hadn't surfaced so the river was closed. Nice. So we walked around all the sights instead. We went for the obligatory Singapore Sling in the Long Bar in Raffles Hotel, which was really contrived, very touristy and very expensive. However throwing the nuts on the floor was good fun.
That evening we went to Lau Pa Sat one of the biggest Hawker Markets in the city. It's massive, has hundreds of stalls selling all matter of food, and each place employs people (hawkers) to come and shout at you to get you to eat in their place. If you haven't had a beer it's almost imposible to cope. We had some food from a place the locals seemed to like and it was very good. Leanne even used chopsticks!!
Next day we went on our boat cruise which was lovely. Well it was up until the point where the missing body surfaced next to our boat!!! The driver put his foot down (can you do that in a boat?) and we headed off as the police watched on.
That night we visited the Night Safari which was pretty good. The tram tour wasn't great but the walk around after was brill. We got so close to leopards, flying foxes, and hyenas. We both really enjoyed it. I then got my feet cleaned by fish in a special tank. It was very odd but they did a really good job and only a few of them died!!! Only kidding.
Next day we flew to Kuala Lumpur which is where we are now. Will let you know all about this place in our next update.
