Nazca..
We arrived yesterday and had decided to treat ourselves to a nice hotel, so we were well chuffed when our expectations were met for once..not only that but it was hot, hot enough to swim in the pool...if i had swimmers.. anyway the point of being here was to see the Nazca Lines.
Ancient people, called funnily enough the Nazca, in about 300bc drew huge images on a valley floor that can only be seen from the air..Various theories are held, aliens and drugs as usual being but two, but the reality it seems is that the Nazca were praying to their gods for rain. It is v dry here and surrounded by mountains and it was thought that the gods lived in the mountains and if they were happy then they would cry and the plains would have rain. There was a huge drought for 40years and the shapes and pictures got bigger as they became more desperate before war and famine etc destroyed the civilisation. Anyway history lesson over.
We were up early and taken out to the aerodrome where we waited for a while to board a 5 seater Cessna light aircraft.. Hayley had taken her seasick pill and was outwardly more calm than when getting on LIAT..we took off and spent 30 minutes banking sharply left and right to see the amazing patterns for ourselves. They drew images of a monkey, humming bird, dog and perhaps spookily of all a man on the side of a hill who looks like a space man. It is impossible to really describe the scale of what we saw and the effect they have when you see them. It is something I have always wanted to see and it didn't disappoint.
After all my bravado and Hayley's worry it was me who began to turn a bit green and I needed an emergency chewing gum from H to see me safely back without throwing up..
Tonight we are getting an overnight bus to Arequipa which is down in the south of the country. From there we hope to do some trekking around Colca Canyon which is deeper than the Grand Canyon.. and shopping....h xx
