We had an early start on Tuesday morning - the taxi fetched us at 4.30am and we headed to the airport - Matt bound for Perth and I was heading to Adelaide to see family.
I arrived in Adelaide and was met by my Uncle, Phil and Aunt, Jenny. They took me on a tour of the city on the way back from the airport. The city is really pretty and there are lots of historical buildings. In the afternoon, we headed to a wildlife sanctuary, where I finally got to feed Kangaroos and see some koalas. We saw a joey too, lazing in his mum's pouch - very cute!
That evening we headed to Lisa's house for a barbecue and I finally got to meet my Australian cousins - Lisa and Andrew, and their families. We had a great evening with lots of laughter!
The next morning, Tom & Pippa (Lisa's children) joined us and we went on a lovely day out - first to the rocking horse - a giant horse, which we climbed! And then onto a riverside town where we had a picnic and enjoyed the sun (and Pippa played hairdresser!).
Phil is very interested in family history so I racked his brains while I was there and learned loads!
After a lovely few days I was seen off by Ollie and Pippa, Phil, Jenny & Lisa - with a few tears and lots of memories!
Matt, Martie and Sharni met me at the airport in Perth and we headed to their house and met the dogs - Winston (a spaniel cross labrador) & Henry (a staffie, cross greyhound, cross labrador!!). That evening the girls whipped the boys into shape over a game of articulate!
Our time in Perth was great fun - Mart & Sharnie took us for high tea at the top of one of the buildings in Perth - a revolving restaurant with amazing views. We went for long walks with the dogs - on the beach and in their neighbourhood and in beautiful Kings Park. We had some serious games of frisbee and spent time lazing on the beach & swimming (Matt, not me!)
After church on Sunday, we caught the ferry across to South Perth, where Matt, Martie and their friend, Wendy, took out a catamaran and got rather wet! (Funny to watch from the shore!).
We also went to a place called the Maze for the day, where we had a barbecue and then a few games of putt-putt and frisbee golf. We decided to give the Maze a go - thinking it was just for kids (we were sorely mistaken!) - and took a good half hour to get out of it! Good times! After all that we felt like we deserved tea in the botanical gardens!
On our final day, Sharni and I headed to the shops, while the boys sorted out visas for Thailand and then took up their usual positions in front of the playstation and the serious game of football! That night, after a Mexican dinner, the Bertrams took on the Crawfords in a serious game of pool (it was a draw...!)
We left Australia after 3 fantastic weeks, definitely keen to go back at some point, perhaps for a year's work experience after the UK...it reminded us so much of South Africa. It was so nice to spend time with family and friends after 6 months of travel - definitely a refreshing time!
