We arrived into Kuala Lumpur at 10pm, after a great flight (Malaysian Airlines are highly recommended!) and got a taxi straight to our hotel.
Things here are pretty cheap and we stayed in a lovely hotel in the city centre for the price of a motel in the States!
Our first few days were spent organising our 2 weeks in Malaysia - and enjoying the luxuries of our hotel! We managed to change our flights to Bangkok for no charge (another reason why we love Malaysian Airlines!) and book flights with Air Asia to Lake Kenyir.
We hit the shopping district - found clothes and shoes very cheap, but electrical goods quite comparable to the US. Matt bought a new lens for his camera though, at a pretty reduced price.
We went to the famous KL Towers - the 3rd highest building in the world - and very impresssive. At night it really lights up and outside is a show of fountains and lights - very pretty and quite different at night.
On Saturday we went to the aquarium, and saw the hugest grouper we had ever seen! Then onto the bird park and botanical gardens. The bird park was amazing and Matt fed the parakeets (and got pooed on - again, very funny to watch!!).
We made it back to the hotel just in time for the rain to come - November is part of the monsoon season.
We got an early night as the World Cup Final was being shown at 2.45am! We woke up in time and were very happy we did! As the final whistle blew, we headed downstairs to get our taxi to the airport for our 7am flight to Kuala Terengganu. Our taxi journey was definitely up there with the worst of them (yup, probably scarier than La Paz) - our driver, clearly in practice for the Malaysian GP later that day, drove at 140km an hour in an 80 zone. There were many prayers sent up and I was close to kissing the ground when we finally arrived at the airport.
With my nerves already shot, we got onto the plane (flying gets worse every time for me), only to see smoke coming out of the vents as we took off...luckily, Matt assured me that it was just the aircon.
We arrived in KT and headed straight to Lake Kenyir. We are staying at a resort that is beautiful but almost completely deserted! It has worked in our favour as it's meant that we got upgraded to a chalet overlooking the lake! A real backpacker bonus! It also means that we have staff members falling over themselves to help us - also really nice!
The monsoon season is very much upon us here so we have had a lot of rain, but it's been lovely to be in these surroundings and just take in the scenery.
