Right.. it is 5 am in Bkk and I am either suffering from a serious case of jet lag ( which I like to refer to as 'the traveller's b****), a caffeine overdose or from a rare form of overexcitement, point is, my wake up call is in about an hour and I cannot get to sleep (dammit), so I am turning to my 'dear diary situation' in hopes of distracting myself long enough to get to breakfast and, surprise surprise, stuff my face!
Honestly, I've not been here 24 hours and I have sampled an inordinate amount of food for someone my size. Oddly enough, I have no idea what it is exactly I've eaten, as most of the food was purchased on street stalls from vendors with whom I had no proper way of communicating, all I know is I had skewers with little balls on them, skewers with some meat, fruit, something with duck, some steamed meat wrapped in leafs, fried shrimp, blueberry icecream flavoured Oreos ( don't judge me, I HAD TO and they were gooood) and more...Basically my criteria for picking food started off with: Are the locals eating here? Does it smell nice? do I want to know what it is?
and ended up being more along the lines of: Who am i kidding, I'll eat it anyways.
I am so grateful for my strong tummy, I'm pretty sure I know people who would've gotten sick just looking at the food being prepared on the streets.
I should probably mention that all this eating was done at the midnight market in the red light district, not the savviest of moves if you have a weak stomach, I don't reccomend it to anyone else, but I know I can take it.
The red light district is cool, safe for girls to tour alone, even at night (btw I took the skytrain there too, it runs 'till midnight and is also, totally safe for women alone), noone bothered me and I got some really cool deals on knick knacks and souveniers. I particularly enjoyed being stopped by odd men ( only happened twice, not a big deal) who insisted on showing me flipbooks containing images of young guys for 'rent'. Now I have to wonder whether I actually look that desperate or whether they're trying to rake up some more cash, as I am pretty damn sure the
flipbooks were produced to target men rather than women.
Anyways...
I am looking forward to my busy busy day today. I will be going on a 8 hour trip to a floating artisan market, then on an elephant ride, then I will be going to a theatrical production to enjoy a typical Thai performance. Later at night I will visit the flower market, which I wanted to do today but unfortunately is shut on Mondays, and tomorrow morning before dawn I will be going to a huuuuuge produce market to sample more fresh, awesome, fingerlicking Thai goodies..
Wishing you guys in Europe a good night, I am heading poolside to do some yoga (thats right, I've officially lost it for Yoga)
xx
