My Australia Fun
Hi gang. You are now reading my last entry from Brisbane until I return here (whenever that may be). It's all very sad, Brisbane's been good to me. I suppose I've been quite busy in the last couple of weeks - still working 7-2.30 every day which leaves me constantly knackered, although I have been known to slip in the odd afternoon nap which reminds me of being a baby and being at uni. I shall now attempt to recall everything that has happened to me in the last fortnight or so. I've spent ages trying to remember, I don't think my brain is what it used to be. The goon and VB must have rotted all my brain cells. I'm going to start with the Friday before last, because that's literally as far back as I can remember - Australia has been a complete blur before that. Ages and ages ago, I thought it would be nice to return to my university ways for a day, and I went to an Economics lecture with Hannah's sister Lauren at the University of Queensland. It would appear that lectures over here are similar to those in England. The campus was really nice and it made me miss uni... I don't think I could really afford the $50,000 I'd need to do a masters here though. If anyone does have that amount of money lying around, then you know what to do! Friday night has become Telstra night, so we all hit the town and had a fair bit to drink. I'll shove some photos up from the night when I can be bothered. Then on the Saturday I went to the lovely Suncorp Stadium to watch Australia play Paraguay in the football. Not the worst match in the world and it only cost $20 - bit of a bargain. And you can drink beer in the stadium! Then on Sunday came my favourite day I've ever spent in Brisbane in my whole life. Me and Hannah went to Lone Pine animal sanctuary, which is, and I quote, "the biggest koala sanctuary in the world". But they don't just have koalas there, no sir! They have all kinds of crazy Australian animals, such as the exotic kangaroo and snakes and birds and what have you. There were tons of kangaroos all running about the place and they were super-tame and were happy to eat out of your hand (as I'm sure you can gather from the photos). We splashed out a bit and went on a ferry cruise down the river to get there, which was very nice. And we finished the day with a few cheeky pints. And the weather was brilliant. As was the company. What more could you ask for? Absolutely nothing. And I learned two fascinating facts: kangaroos can't walk backwards (that one is courtesy of Hannah) and koalas poo about 80 times a day (courtesy of a koala handler who was covered in poo. Probably). Moving on to Monday and Tuesday now, my good friends from Darwin John and Katie finally arrived in Brisbane so I met up with them for a few weeks, and came agonisingly close to winning 5 days rental of a camper van by bowling a frozen chicken at a load of skittles whilst impersonating different animals. You'd have thought I'd have won, what with my frozen chicken bowling skills, but it just wasn't to be this time. I can't remember what I did last Wednesday, so we'll forget about that. No doubt it was something exciting, knowing me. Onto Thursday then. Again, this was a bit of a Telstra night. Went out for a few drinks with the crew and then some of us went round Andy's house (from Telstra) and munched on some pizza. His house is much better than mine. Actually, everyone's house seems a lot better than mine, but I don't mind living in squalour. Then on Friday, the Telstra bunch were out again. Thank god for Telstra, not only do they do great things within the telecommunications industry, but they almost single-handedly provide me with a social life. Ok, that was Friday. Good night that, actually. And on Saturday, Hannah and I went to Surfers Paradise. I wasn't expecting it to be a particularly great place after hearing it was like Blackpool and Benidorm (not that there's anything wrong with Benidorm but I wouldn't go there every year, mother and father.....), but that turned out to be a big load of rubbish. In real life, it's a very nice place with lots of classy bits and bobs. Like shops and restaurants and stuff like that. The beach is lovely and absolutely huge. Got a bit sunburned (as you do), but Hannah came off a little bit worse. Poor girl.... And I had officially the best fish and chips in existence. So if you want proper fish and chips, you'll all just have to come over to Surfers and I'll treat you. Mmmmm, it was very yummy. So that was a very nice day. Went to the pub in the evening. And then on Sunday I went round and was fed and entertained by the wonderful inhabitants of the Young/Fenton household. I must acknowledge the brilliant hospitality of Miss Lauren Young (she makes economics sexy), Mr Steve Fenton (he gives me beer and sport) and of course Miss Hannah Young. Where would I be without them? Probably a lot more bored. Will I ever eat a better potato salad or coleslaw those I eat round their house? No, I won't. And Eddie is the best dog in the world, obviously.
And that brings us pretty much up to date. Have had the last couple of days off to recover and mentally prepare myself for my birthday and going to Sydney. Will no doubt be out a couple of times before Saturday (and certainly for my big 23rd on Friday). This time in four days I shall be in Sydney again. Can't quite believe it. See you in Sydney!
