My Australia Fun
Yeah, new update time! I'm sure, like me, you're all giddy with excitement. So, I believe I had just arrived in Brisbane when I last updated. Well, I'm still in Brisbane. Which is fine by me, because I like it here (and also, I probably couldn't really afford to move anywhere else). I haven't been up to a great deal in the last few weeks, but I guess the main occupier of my time has been job-hunting. Before I came to Brisbane I'd only worked about 8 days in four and a half months or so. That's quite lazy, isn't it? After a slow start to my job hunt, I worked last week at a futuristic-sounding company called WebCentral. Don't really know what they do, but it's definitely something to do with websites. I got the awesome wage of $20 an hour for bashing away at the keyboard for a while and answering a phone every now and then. Perfect! I wanted to stay there longer, and a morbidly obese woman and very gay man in the office (my two best friends there) started a campaign to keep me there, but all to no avail. So this week I was officially unemployed again. Until yesterday! It truly was an explosion of excitement as I got offered three jobs, I went to one interview and had two more potential interviews. It never rains but it pours. So I accepted the best-sounding one, and I start my training tomorrow. It's for Telstra, for five weeks, and involves something to do with voicemail, and apparently it's very easy. My dorm mate told me. And, as if this all wasn't enough, I'll get paid double time most of the weekend - $36 an hour! I almost fainted when they told me. I'll be rich within a few hours. That's all very exciting. I'm quite happy to have something to do with my days, I've just about exhausted all the free or cheap possibilities (going to the beach, museums, art galleries, wandering round the malls, checking out the botanic gardens and parklands, general sightseeing, hardcore jobhunting....you get the idea). I've been out on the town a few times, not too often though. I've got to be responsible with my money. I got paid today though, so perhaps that'll all change soon. I also got a haircut today, which isn't that exciting admittedly, but I thought I'd raise the topic because it took the woman 40 MINUTES to cut it!?!?! How is that possible? And I got it shampooed after! And it's all 'funky' now, apparently. Not sure what to make of it. That's what you get if you let a trainee cut your hair, I suppose. And it was perhaps the least heterosexual hour I've ever spent. Cost the same as Tony's, mind you (but Karen could have done a better job, I'm sure).
What else? Hmm...I'm still living in a hostel, but I'm going to try and hunt for a house or apartment to share for about the same price. Sleeping in the same room as 8 other people isn't as appealing as it once was.
Oh! And, excitingly, I have appeared in Queensland's Sunday paper, the one and only Sunday Mail! Me and a girl I was with were randomly photographed in the bar we were in and they slapped us in the 'out and about' section of the paper. Now that I've got a 'funky' haircut, no doubt I'll be in there every week now.
I hope everyone has had a moment or two to grieve the passing of Steve Irwin. Very sad.
Think that's it. Weather's nice at the moment, although it did chuck it down for a couple of days. Plan is to stay here for 5-6 weeks then head down to Sydney. Can't believe I'm working tomorrow. Awful! But necessary! Bye now!
