After landing in San Francisco at around 8.45pm both Leah and I were shattered and still feeling sick. So after a friendly cab ride to the Fusion hotel we hit the hay straight away.
After a good nights sleep I gave Melina a call, (Melina is a good friend of Tim's and mine that we met on our last OS trip, in London.) to meet up down at Pier 39 after lunch. Leah and I decided that we would walk down to the Pier. Forgetting of course about the crazy hills that San Fran is known for.... Lucky for us I randomly picked a street that had a tunnel that went through the middle of the hill.
After walking through Union Square, and the tunnel we ended up in China Town. The streets were busy with people walking in and out of all the shops, with fresh fish and fruit everywhere. After walking down the other side of the hill, we ended up at destination Pier 39.
After a quick walk down the touristy pier there's plenty to do, you can shop, eat, check out the sea lions or take a picture of Alcatraz. Leah and I decided we'd do everything the pier had to offer. But after finding the shops didn't have a San Fran pin to add to Leah's collection, we went to get some food. The fish was fresh but Leah made the mistake of ordering chips and not French fries, one she'll never make again. Next up we checked out the sea lions, these playful animals seem to always be up to something, at least the male sea lions anyway. Pushing each other off the platoons, jumping around and on top of each other. It was a good pick me me up for both Leah and I. Looking across the bay is Alcatraz, we were able to get some great pictures which we found out later was rare.
We then met up with Melina, it was great to catch up while we were on our way to the Golden Gate Bridge. After hopping off the bus at the stop that claimed to be the Golden Gate Bridge we were shocked that even though we were standing right next to it the fog was so thick that the bridge wasn't visable. Melina informs us that this is normal and that usually the whole bay and downtown districts of San Fran are covered in fog. We thought we may as well take some photos anyway, so you can see what we mean.
That night was pretty uneventful..... Except for the first ever Earthquake Leah and I have experienced. It measured 3.2 on the richter scale and was just enough to shake the building. I wouldn't have noticed it myself if Leah hadn't said something, as it reminded me of our old neighbours running up and down the stairs. As I said the night was pretty uneventful.
