We got a bus from Phnom Penh to a little town called Stung Tren which was close to the boarder of Laos and had to stay there overnight. It's quite a small town with very little to do. The next morning we got a boat across the Mekong, a bus across the boarder and then another boat across over to Don Det. Don Det is a small island which is part of the 4,000 Islands. It's quite quiet and still has a very traditional way of life.
We spent 3 nights on the island in total. On the afternoon we arrived we decided to try and walk to the bridge that connected Don Det to Don Kon, a slightly bigger island. We weren't sure how long it would take or how far it was but decided to explore anyway as the island wasn't that big. Due to the recent downpore the path was quite muddy so we weren't walking very fast. After about an hour we decided we should head back as it would start to get dark soon. We walked back but decided to stop at a bar for a toilet stop and quick drink. As we sat there the heavens opened so we decided to wait unil the rain passed. We ended up sitting there for nearly two hours and the rain still didn't pass!! It was very dark by this point and seemed like the rain wasn't going to stop so thoight we should try and get back to our huts.
We made Patrick go at the front so that he could navigate us back in the dark. We had three torches between the four of so had a little bit of light. What should have taken 10-15 minutes took around half an hour, we were completely coaked by the time we got back.
We had rented two double huts, Casey and Sarah were sharing and I was on my own. When we got back I decided that it was too scary to sleep on my own because of the storm so the three of us shared one bed. It was a bit of a squeeze but I'm sure I got more sleep that I would have if I'd slept on my own. I later found out that whilst I was getting my stuff from my hut, the girls had gone into their hut and spotted three big spiders. Knowing my fear they thought it best not to tell me. Probably a very wise idea!! However I did find one in the roon the next night so had two sleepless nights. Have a look at the picture of the beast!
The huts were very basic, just a bed in the roon and an oil lantern, no electricity. The bathroom was shared, one hut for the squat toilet and one hut for the cold shower! The cold shower wasn't too bad when it was warm in the morning. It wasn't good when you needed the toilet in the middle of the night though.
The weather cleared up and Sarah, another of the girls friends, arrived so I had someone to share my hut with. We spent the next couple of days walking and cycling around the island and finally made it over to Don Kon. I discovered that I had forgotten how to ride a bike! I didn't think that was possible but I have the scrapes and bruises to prove it!
