Had a fairly pleasant 13 hour sleeper bus journey from bangkok to chang mai arrived around 8am to our guesthouse and no one was around so we had to wake them up. Chang Mai is a nice little city.....it feels quite small compared to bangkok but it is the 2nd largest city in thailand. Feels like quite a relaxed place, seems like there is more travel agents and and guesthouses than anything else.....oh and another boots! woohoo
We visited the Eleplant nature park which is a sanctuary for rescued elephants. Had an amazing day with the elephants, feeding and bathing them. There was 35 in total and all had a mahout with them as it is open land and the elephants can roam where they want. there is only a small river that seperates the elephants from the local village. Would definatley like to go back and volunteer there. I am surprised some of the elephants trust humans again after how badly they were treated before they were rescued. All the people that work there and all the food is from the local village.
From chang mai we went to Pai for 2 days as everyone we met had said it was a lovely place. It was a 4 hour bus journey up through the mountains on windy roads and a few people got travel sickness....me included, its the first time ive suffered from it....luckily i wasnt sick like the others! We arrive in Pai with no accommodation booked so had a little wonder round and found somewhere,so we dumped our bags and headed for a walk around town. The town is very small but has a lovely atmosphere, lots of thai people come here for a weekend away. Its very chilly on a night time, either im used to the heat now or it really is cold! so lots of liptons tea and hot chocolate was the choice of drink on an evening while we strolled the streets looking at the night market. I've not drank so much tea since i left home!
For my sins I done another trek! even though i said i hated the trek in Nepal. I had no shoes to wear so the guy said if i couldnt find any at the night market he would be able to get me some. So the day of the trek I let him know i couldnt find any and i was a little surprised when he gave me......Primark cream pimsoles! lol. no need to explain that these werent suitable for the 4 hour trek and i was slipping all over the place in the wet mud, needless to say i slipped into the mud and the cream shoes were now brown! so a lesson learnt, dont do gentle trekking in Primark pimsoles!
From Pai we returned to chang mai to get the bus to chang rai. Not much to write home about in chang rai, its a strange little town with not much there and not much to do,seems like its just a stop off place if your going overland into laos
