After booking a train ticket in goa we left for the night train to Kerala which took about 13 hours. One thing about the Indian trains, they are always late! ours was 2 hours late and no-one batted an eyelid or complained. When you first arrive at the train station it feels like chaos but after a while you realise its organised chaos. The night train was so much more comfortable than the coach, had our own clean sheets and pillow. Toilets were indian and western style, needless to say I tried not to use the toilet much as neither were especially clean. The sleeping arrangements on the train was 4 beds in a compartment, I say a compartment it was only a thin curtain to close over from the main walkway in the middle of the carriage. Our evening meal was included in the price and was ok but a few of the locals complained about the food saying what would us foreigners think of this terrible food, was still tastier than some indian food ive had at home!
Arrived in Kerala at 6AM with the monsoon rain pouring down, not the welcome we had expected. We squashed ourselves and backpacks into a tiny little tuk tuk, it was nice travelling through the town at 6AM seeing the town start to wake up and people going about there morning routine. After 45 mins on bumpy roads with the rain lashing down and getting stuck on the middle of a railway line for a few mins we arrived in Fort Cochin. We woke up later that morning to more rain and......a cold shower! guess this is proper backpacking best get used to it haha. Were we stayed was a nice little village but not much to do there, everything closed around 10pm and couldnt find any kind of restaurant and the ones we did find were about 20 mins tuk tuk ride frim where we stayed and didnt serve any alcohol either which meant an early night for us. I did stumble across an alcohol shop and all the men were queing outside, I went to look at the prices and buy something and all the men were staring at me. I'm guessing women dont ever buy alcohol there! lol.
We went on the backwaters on a day cruise, it was so relaxing and quiet....no horns beeping just locals steering there little boats and washing their clothes at the side of the river. We stopped off at someones house were they made string from the husk of a coconut.
After the cold showers and monsoon rain we treat ourselves to a late afternoon lunch at a 5 start hotel which is a sister hotel to the Taj Mahal in Mumbai. The food was amazing, we ended up staying there for a long time and watched as the sun set. We were then very tempted to stay the night and asked what the cheapest room was, but at £200 a room it was a little over our budget!
