The next morning we left really early in time to fit in another hike before we left. We took the canoe and paddled upstream. We saw a Giant River Otter, Vultures, Slate Coloured Hawk, Chestnut Woodpecker, Macaws and also an adult Sloth high in the trees. We hiked through to a viewing platform, where we saw a Hoatzin Bird, which looks like a prehistoric bird, with a red mohawk!
Holly decided to take a mud bath, on the way back to the boat; she was walking along and the next minute she shrunk to about 3 foot, when her leg got sucked into a thigh-high mud swamp!! She couldn't pull her leg out and her boots kept making rude noises! Eventually, Rudy and Robin had to pull her out. Laura didn't laugh. At all!! (Titter!)
It was then time to head back along the river to the lodge. On the way we saw a web snake, a red water snake, but unfortunately I didn't manage to get Rob a photo, I know how disappointed he'll be!
We left the lodge straight after another yummy lunch and began the trip back to Iquitos, for our flight back to Lima....if only it was that simple! As you know, we love a little bit of excitment and that is what we got! The boat decided to break down in the middle of the Amazon, with very little time to spare to make our flight! But, eventually, they managed to fix the problem and we were on our way again, but running late. Then, as we were enjoying the view, but panicking a little about the time, the boat "chug, chug, chugs" and stops, again! This time it didn't start again, so we were stranded in the middle of the river trying to flag down passing boats. Thankfully a small dug out canoe carrying a family of four agreed to take us to a small village, not far from where we had stopped. So we, Rudy and all our luggage piled into their canoe and we watched as the boat sunk so deep into the water that water began to trickle in! But luckily we made it to dry land without a dunking! We then ran with our luggage through the village, where we found a motorbike with a small trailer on the back which took us, Rudy and 5 pieces of luggage to the airport. The poor boy was thrashing his little bike, with Rudy shouting in the back to go faster! We had resigned ourselves to the fact that we weren't going to make the flight, it was 5.30 when we pulled into the airport and our flight was leaving at 5.40!! We started to wonder how we were going to reschedule our flight to Lima and then to Brazil, the following day, but Rudy ushered us through to the Lan desk anyway, and they let us on!! Woooo hoooo! We had to run like the wind, through security and straight on to the plane that was waiting to taxi off. All in all, despite the mad rush at the end, we had an amazing time and would take anyone back who would like to go! The Amazon Rocks!
