Early start again to catch the train to Cochin at 4.30am! The train was delayed nearly 3 hours so we settled down with our foot rests again! We made another friend, a soon to be bridegroom who gave us both an invitation to his wedding, in May! The train was a bit better in the A/C car, we even got breakfast included, an omelette sandwich.
After arriving in Cochin we headed to our hotel in Fort Cochin (an island just off the mainland) called Adam's Old Inn, which we'd booked in advance this time! It was basic, but is classed as a homestay, so the place is run by a friendly family and the owner is helping us to arrange a trip to the tea plantations and house boat.
We went for a walk around to see the famous Chinese fishing nets, there are around a dozen on the harbour front, which were originally bought to Cochin by the Chinese in 1350 AD. One of the friendly fishermen invited us ''on board"' to have a closer look. There were two young cats who were eyeing the fish up - the man gave them the smallest fish for their dinner (ahh - no, Rob, we didn't stroke them). That evening we headed to the Kathakali centre to watch a performance of Narakasura Vadham. Kathakali is one of the oldest theatre forms in the world and originates from Kerala. The actors perform using song and dance to act out Hindu Mythology. We arrived early to see them put the make-up on - which took an hour and a half! The show was really impressive, they explained how different words were acted out and how facial expressions are used to convey different emotions - it was very interesting and quite funny!
