We headed to Alleppy to spend some time on a houseboat. On the way, we called into one of the many spice gardens in the area and had a tour of the gardens and all of its plants and trees. The guide explained how all the plants can be used; to cure illness, flavour food, scare snakes and even for shampoo and dye hair! The garden could pretty much cure any problem you could possibly have! It was very interesting and we got to taste some of the spices too!
We arrived at the houseboat and met the crew; Thomas the driver, Aneesh the chef and the engine man (we can't remember his name!). We set off for our first stop, where we moored up to eat a home cooked lunch - there was absolutely loads, but it was all really yummy!!! We then set sail again (sort of) to a small village where we had a walk round with Aneesh, but unfortunately we arrived as people were either at mass or settling down to the Sunday Film so the streets were strangely very quiet!
We then headed a little further through the backwaters, to moor up for the night. The day was really relaxing, we passed lots of local villagers going about their daily business; washing their clothes in the river and children playing in the water. We did feel like we were intruding a little bit, though, as we were basically sailing through their back yard! We had a big dinner that evening and lay and watched the stars for a while, before heading for a much needed early night!
