What a night out with the Ratt family to cap off a wonderful day. Doris and Anna had chosen a special restaurant situated up the valley a little way on a hillside vineyard overlooking the city. The view was magic and the food was typical hearty Austrian fare - very tasty and wholesome and included dumplings, sauerkraut, rissoles & roast pork washed down with plenty of the local wine. Much laughter and fun was had by all, including some attempt at karaoke by Doris and myself.
Must recap a little on yesterday as it gives the impression that the Hapsburg treasury only contains relics (although they were very fascinating and amusing). As the name suggests it contains the spectacular collection jewellery and precious stones which once made up part of the wealth of the Hapsburgs; unfortunately some pieces were sold to pay their keep when times got rough and others were dismantled and made into new pieces. There were also many paintings, furnishings, coronation robes etc which brought to life this glorious period when indeed the "sun never set on their empire".
Today was a catch-up day - washing, shopping and a visit to the Belvedere, Prince Eugene's palace which is like a smaller more modest version of Schoenbrun and Versailles. Tonight, we are honoured to be the first guests to share a meal in Doris' new apartment.
