Christmas is now over. The 40 hour day started when I left for Auckland. When I arrived, the 4 hour wait turned into a 7 hour one as my plane was delayed. 7 hours in auckland airport on Christmas! Thankfully the 12 hour flight went quick as I had taken a sleeping pill and slept for 8 hours. Not before having a terrible meal! I woke up to breakfast and then it was pretty much time to get off.
The scenery flying into BA was AMAZING! green everywhere and little shacks of houses everywhere. Proceded thru (lack of) immigration and grabbed a cab into the city. The drive in was crazy. At several points the driver cut across about 8 lanes of traffic to make an exit. At about 130kmph, and everyone else was doing this speed too. There were families stopped on the roadside celebrating christmas with bbq and ball games. But seeing all of the shacks people were living in was heartbreaking, and even when stopped at the lights in some suburbs there were little kids begging. And it was Christmas day. Although the amount of ... memorilbilia... about the place made me think that dad would love this place.
Checked into my hostel, got aquainted with the place and then headed out on a walk around the area. Was about 7 pm by this point and still heaps of people everywhere. Two blocks away is the Obelisco and a huge christmas tree, looked beautiful with all the lights shining! At the Obelisco people were gathered talking and drinking (noticed a few empty wine bottles about the place). It was warm at 8pm 23.5deg. Walked down calle florida (pedestrian mall) where there were people with blankets on the ground selling t shirts, jewelry etc. Tried to call mum at home in chch from the locturias (where the man at the desk laughed at my spanish and proceeded to talk to me in English) but got the answerphone, cost 2.20 peso (around $1 NZ).
At the hostel there is a girl my age from chch! What are the chances of that!
In for a hot sleep tonight but luckily it rained and cooled things down a bit, still 10 deg warmer than I am used to.
Heading off to La Boca and Palermo tomorrow I think and then San Telmo for markets on Sunday.
