Well it's Turkey Day. It was really cold when we woke this morning but had to get motivated as Paul was entering the 7.30 am 5 mile Turkey Trot. He headed off early to register and the boys and I headed down at 7am. This race was fairly serious but it was so cold it felt like I was being stabbed in the face with needles walking around. Paul did really well and he crossed the line looking a little greyish white like everyone else from the extreme cold. But he was pretty proud of his achievement on such a hilly course.
We then retreated back to the hotel and the kids had brekkie while I dried my feet out and then we put all our Australian gear and tattoos on and headed off for the 10.30 race the boys and I were doing. Unfortunately someone did not confirm details at 7.30 hmmmm wonder who that was and he drove us to the wrong place. So after a heated argument we found the right location and we headed off in silence as that seemed like the better option.
Thankfully we werent the only ones dressed up. Most were dressed as turkeys or pilgrims. So off the boys and I went on a 5km walk down the oldest road in America. What we actually did was walk a lot further than 5kms down a road completely full of muddy pot holes. But the good thing was we walked really quickly to stay warm so I was really happy with the effort.
After a hot shower and a change of clothes we headed to Plymouth plantation for thanksgiving dinner. We were sat with the Keating family from Springfield. I sat next to Maurice, someone who talks as much as me so we pretty much didn't draw breath. Our dinner started with a soup that was vegetable but tomato based....delicious. We then lined up for our main course. I had turkey, sweet potato, creamed onions, sirloin beef, salad and stuff. The meal was delicious and we all really enjoyed it but couldn't finish the big portion. Next was dessert and yes I had pumpkin pie....hmmmm did not like it. Kids really enjoyed it but I won't be having that again.
After lunch we explored the plantation as they had character reinactments and we learned a lot of how people lived.
Once back at the hotel we had a bit of down time as all shops were closed and the kids wanted to do black Friday sales. So I relented on the compromise that they could go to Walmart as the open at 6pm unlike all the other stores opening after midnight. So off we went and the boys went to line up with all the other Walmart people. That is when they learned that in Massachusetts shops open at 1am. While Paul and I sat in the car it started to snow so we watched that and the kids came racing over asking to stay in line for 5 hrs....ummm that was a no and they were told to get in the car and we would leave the crazy Walmart people there to wait in the snow for 5 hrs. Some were prepared with tents though.
So after a very full day and an early rise after promising to take the boys to Walmart at 6am, I am going to bed in my very well earned turkey trot shirt
