Ahhh, what a wonderful feeling being here. We arrived this morning after a reasonably comfortable journey, with some minor unexpected twists. At first, we expected to pay the Mexico exit tax (the info about this is nowhere to be found on their official websites!). We were given leaflets at the border explaining that we will need to pay this tax, but it all came down to spending one minute with the officials and leaving with the stamp in our passports (no one asked us to pay anything). Then we all needed to disembark and bring our luggage with us to the Belize border. And then came a real surprise! The official informed me that I needed a visa to enter the country because I hold the Croatian passport. Long story short, I claimed that I didn't, as per their official website, he showed me some form claiming that I did and, eventually, came back stating that he received a conflicting info as well. In the end, to our relief, he decided to stamp my passport and let me through. Belize City seems like a very chaotic place and we were, along with another couple travelling to the same destination, whisked by a taxi boat staff straight to the port. Around 45 mins later we arrived to the island, which is something completely different.
Caye caulker is an island village with around 1800 inhabitants. There are no cars, the whole place can be walked around and the golf carts are taxis. There are no paved streets, just the sand under your feet. The island is low-laying and is 3 meters above the sea level at its highest point.
The place is, like the rest of the country it seems, a bit rough around the edges, but incredibly interesting and beautiful. Colourful wooden houses, friendly and relaxed people; the island slogan is "go slow" and people really live with the nature from what we could have seen so far. It feels like a hidden world.
This time we love our accommodation - a traditional, airy and very clean house with veranda.
We met the owners' parrot Chico, who was adorable - chatting, waving and laughing with us. Such a beautiful and clever creature.
That's it for now, more updates to follow.
