We've been here for almost 4 days now and we're getting to know the good, the bad and the ugly :)
I'm under the impression of the 'ugly' at the moment, after a man selling fruit salads tried to short-change me for the whole of 40 Belizean dollars! He's either reckless or I don't seem very much on the ball today. I regret now for not taking my money back and walking away, but I really needed that fruit!
Luckily, it seems that most other people are genuine, friendly and not greedy. Living in a big city, it is easy to forget that there are still small communities where strangers make eye contact, smile and greet each other; where children spend their free time playing together outside; where teenagers don't seem moody and intimidating towards each other...and no obsessive compulsive staring at iPads, smartphones or the children glued to their laptops playing (most likely Minecraft) for hours!!
There are differences here as well. Some people build big hotels made out of cement (not like most other wooden houses) and there is a very poor area nearby where everything's small and worn down.
The 'good' (in a way) is that thee are quite a few stray dogs, but they all seem pretty tame and well fed. They happily coexist with the local people who seem to treat them well and there is always some food around. Also, the weather is warm and the island is clean, so it looks like a not such a bad "dog's life" after all.
We went to the beach today, which is not really a beach. There's only one place on the island where people go to hang out, snorkel and swim. It is called The Split, because that's where the island was split in two after a hurricane started the process and then people expanded the gap to make way for the small boats. It is almost certain we will see every tourist currently on the island hanging out there at some point.
We are planning to go on a snorkelling tour tomorrow, weather permitting. I hope to have some nice pics to add from there.
