It was time to depart from Vegas and the comfortable, clean beds and hit the road again. A relatively short 2 hour journey to the Hoover Dam. I can confirm it is indeed very big and very concretey. For the time it was built it is an impressive piece of engineering. I enjoyed hoping over the timezone changes between Nevada and Arizona, always good for a laugh. We also saw some massive catfish swimming around in the lake.We then set off to see the Grand Canyon. A nice drive through some rather weird trailer villages and then off road on a dirt track for a few miles - only to arrive and be told it was shut. Shut?! This baffled me slightly, how could a natural wonder the the size of the canyon be 'closed'?! Turns out capitalism even has it's hold on mother nature and there is a cost to see the canyon - only during the designated visiting times of course. So we had no choice but to brave the dirt roads and head to the nearest town for the night and try again in the morning. This turned out ok - we got to drive a long and stay on Route 66 and see a gorgeous sunset as we drove away from the canyon. However, the accommodation here was less than clean or sanitary. It was a double up on the sleeping back liners and sleep on top of the sheets kind of night. Made only slightly better by Men in Black and Dirty Dancing being on the telly.
