Mel's Overseas Trip
Hi All,
I have just gotten back from my village tour around San Cristobal and it was great. We went to Chumul Indigenous Village and it was quite an eye opener. First of all we went to the cemetary and Mayan Church and then to the Chumul Church. The Chumul Chrurch was very interesting, the floor was covered in pine needles as the natives believe these take away bad energy. We witnessed many ceremonies by the natives asking the gods for better produce and cleansing from illnesses. The main ceremonial drink is coca cola as when they drink the gas in the drink that makes them burp they believe they are releasing the bad energy from there systems. A little strange to see an ancient cultural ceremony and then coca cola?????
We then went to the markets where we were swamed by little children selling goods and asking for money and food. They are very good salespeople, but many that were asking for money actually had cell phones on them.......... busted!!!
Very cute little children though and heaps of fun, apart from when one tried to grab my bun roll right out of my hands.........
We then went to a local home and sat in there kitchen to eat authentic tacos. We saw the women weaving blankets and working around the house.
These people live quite simple lifestyles compared to the luxuries we have yet they are so happy, it is great to see.
We have decided not to go to Oaxaca on our trip as it is quite messy at the moment, there is killings in the street, blockades and burning in the street, not really a holiday place. So we are heading to Mexico City early as there is heaps to see and do.
Gotta Go.
Miss you
Love Mel xoxoxox
