Mel's Overseas Trip
Hola,
Went to the Palenque Ruins yesterday with a local guide and learnt alot about the Mayan History. Only 5% of these ruins are uncovered in this area, the other 95% are still covered under vegetation yet to be discovered.
We got to go inside these ruins and see tomb sites of the kings and queens that have been discovered recently, very interesting to be inside and see stone beds and toilets. The Mayan people were a very strange looking generation with long cone heads ( skulls of babies were moulded this way by a wood head garment), and chiseled teeth.
Some of the alfrescos on the buildings were still visible and in full colour, even after many many years.
We went on a jungle walk with our guide and saw monkeys and we heard a toucan but our guide could not find it. Even got to swing on a vine like tarzan!
We then went to Mizo Hal waterfalls and Argua Azul waterfalls for a swim, both were very nice and blue water. The mexican little girls enjoyed splashing us with water and trying to sell us there local produce of banana and hankerchiefs.......... so sad!
Once again we got caught in monsoon rains and then ended the night with a really nice meal at the local restaurant. The local mexican band played and a fire show was performed.
Today we caught a long winding road bus, very sickening!!!!!. We are now in San Cristobal a lovely little colonial mexican city with colourful buildings and cobbled, narrow streets.
When we arrived in San Cristobal we witnessed a protest by the locals which was a real eye opener. There is a bit of controversy in the region at the moment due to elections, but nothing to worry about.
Now going exploring the street and tomorrow will go to a local indigenous village.
Adios
