Despite being SAs third largest city, Durban was a little underwhelming. A somewhat run down Surfers Paradise vibe along the foreshore, with a tacky little amusement park called Durban Fun World. Wandering along the almost deserted cbd streets after dark to find dinner we finally found some bunni chow - a quarter hollowed out white bread loaf filled with curry. Delish!
An interesting backpackers stay at Banana Backpackers saw us packed into a male filled "mixed" dorm. An African "herbalist" (kind of witch doctor) rolling a huge joint on the bunk next to mads' told us it was fate that we had been placed in his room, and that we would be married soon. He then proceeded to smoke out the room with pot smoke while we tried to go to sleep, so we're banking on his predictions being pretty accurate.
The next day was spend sprawled on the grass at Kingsmead stadium to watch Sri Lanka pants South Africa. Sun, cheap beer and not much else to do ensured even Mads had a good day, despite the inherent boringness of the main attraction!
An evening drive down the coast to The Spot Backpackers on the beach at Umtentweni just outside of Port Shepstone. A cute little place owned owned by Pete and Bruce, a couple of Brits who had been motorcycling around the world and temporarily settled on the south coast.
An interesting bunch of South Africans (who enjoyed calling us Bruce and Sheila) provided some drinking buddies for the night which included fire-juggling by a guy who works as a professional clown!
An early morning pack up and off to the Oribi Gorge National Park to stretch our legs on a lovely day hike to Hoopoe falls. We even managed to find a jaffle iron at the backpackers so enjoyed a lovely lunch of tinned spaghetti jaffles! Now on our way to Amapondo backpackers in Port St Johns for new years eve on the beach.
The Chevy spark is going strong and managing the 120km/hr speed limit like a champ. For less than $30 a day it's allowed us into areas we wouldn't have been able to access via transport or hitching and Tom is enjoying treating the backseat as his wardrobe.
Will try to upload some more pics soon.
Hope everyone has a great new years, see you in 2012!
Lots of love,
Mads and Tom.
