Lynds' Travels
Hi all,
Well I made it to Airlie Beach and stayed at Beaches Backpackers, which was pretty fun and lively, though the room I was staying in was a complete state! I was so tired on my first night though, having had very little sleep the night before and a very early morning to catch the bus, I stayed in and watched Desparate Housewives. What a treat, there are televisions in every dorm!
I didn't get that much sleep however, as two of the lads in my dorm, who were complete light weights from France, kept me up until 2am. They got ready to go out at 6:30pm, were back wrecked beyond belief at 10:30pm and then proceeded to take it in turns to puke and huff, puff and pace whilst concentrating on not puking! Delightful! Just getting off to sleep, when one of their alarms went off, which he couldn't here as he was too intoxicated and had his IPod on. I had to literally shake him to ask him to turn it off, which I would have done myself, but he was on the top bunk and I couldn't reach. Not one of my better hostel experiences!
Airlie is a lovely place, very small, but there is lots going on - mainly involving alcohol - and there is a beautiful lagoon, which kicks the Cairns lagoon's arse!
The Whitsundays were absolutely amazing. I went on a 3 day, 2 night trip on a boat called 'Defender' which is the tallest Tall Ship to sail the Whitsunday Islands. The crew were rather funny and luckily the others on board were a great laugh, a really great group of people. Also to top of the trip the weather was glorious with only 20 mins or so of rain.
On each day we were able to snorkel for about 3 hours in total which was great. I saw a huge fished, a Ras!?! that is nick named Elvis as he is the king of the waters and swam down to touch him as he glided through the water. At one point we were blinded by the fish that liked to follow Elvis as he turned and swam passed us. There are literally hundreds of different fish that follow 'The King' around!
We visited Whitehaven Beach, which is really beautiful; clear shallow waters stretching for miles out across the sea to more islands and sand that was whiter than any other beach I have seen. We had a walk up to the rocks and stayed on the beach for about 4 hours, which was heaven.
The food was amazing on the trip. Our chef had worked on Hamen Island, in a really posh resort, that only very, very famous/loaded people visit, such as Julia Roberts and the Beckhams! Although the food wasn't fancy (the kitchen was smaller than my bathroom) it was delicious and the veggie lasagne he cooked was the best I have ever tasted...even better than mine!!!
The cabins got rather hot, so both nights I slept on deck under the stars, which was amazing, as was waking up to the sun rising and the sound of the sea. Only distraction on the second night was due to one lad's snoring, but it stopped after I had kicked his pillow several times!
The only downer of the trip was having to wear the awful, very, very unflattering stinger suits. They covered us from head to toe, were so hot to wear out of the water and were really hard to put on, however everyone had to wear them so it was a laugh.
In the evening when we returned to Airlie, we went out for dinner and drinks together at Magnum's which did really nice, but cheap food. I tried to move my bus until the next day, but was unable to do so, so stayed relatively sober (shock horror!) before starting my 13 hour trip to Hervey Bay at midnight....not the best journey of my life!
Take care y'all

PS In Queensland, although the Aussies also say 'no worries' and 'no dramas' they also use the phrase 'too easy' all the time!
PS2 Only 1.5 months until I return to England. I can't wait to see everyone, though would prefer it if you could all just come out here for a holiday, so I could continue living like a spoilt bum!
