Hi all,
Well I spent 3 days in Byron Bay, but could have stayed lots longer. I love it here, it is a really chilled out small town, with a really nice beach, loads of nice bars and restaurants.
I met a girl, Claire on the bus going from the bus terminal to the hostel and basically spent the three days I was there with her. We stayed in a YHA, which is the most expensive hostel I have stayed in so far, and though it was nice, there prices were up merely because there had been a festival over the Easter weekend and people were still there.
During my time there, though brief I managed to pack quite a lot in, which involved 2 days sunning myself on the beach - the weather was glorious and swimming in the sea, where I nearly drowned having run in to the water with gusto, underestimating the force of the tiny waves!
One evening Claire and I decided to have a walk up to the lighthouse on Cape Byron, which is at the furthest Eastern point of the Australian mainland. It was a really nice walk up there, though a little tougher than expected with steps through the bush that came up to my knees! Once finally there we grabbed an ice cream and took some lovely photos of the sun going down over Byron Bay. We were going to walk down via the beach, though ended up getting a little lost and had to walk back via the road route, which was very dodgy, as it was deserted and there were no pavements. Claire cunningly (!?!) used the light from her mobile to warn oncoming cars that we were there and each time a car passed we got as far off the road as possible, though we were a little scared of the snakes that we might tread on! We finally made it back safe and sound after about an hour and rewarded our efforts with yet more alcohol and a curry!
On Friday we arranged a 1/2 day excursion to Nimbin, which is a town about 40 mins drive from Byron, that is full of aged hippies, smoking puff and muttering on about 'freedom, peace and love' and 'legalising the herb!' It was absolutley hillarious and I took so many pictures of old women who were high, dancing in the street and of signs saying things like 'Jesus wore hemp! Crazy, crazy place. Every shop we went into, we got offered weed and cookies were being sold all over the place. Most amusing, sureal place I have seen.
In the evening Claire and I went to Organic Burgers, which was delicious, before I caught a bus to Sydney, which was nearly 13 hours away; not a long journey in Australian terms, but thinking about it we could get to Scotland and back most, if not all the way in that time! I'm getting very used to being out here it seems, as I didn't think it was too bad!
I can't wait for Sydney...
