Lynds' Travels
Dear all,
Sydney....what a fantastic city! I love it here. There is soooo much to do and see, though a week definitely hasn't been enough.
I was really shocked at how cold it was here and have actually bought hat, gloves and a scarf. It is so much colder than I thought it would be, but it is still near the 20's ha!
I stayed in a hostel called Footprints, which was ok, even though my bed was very uncomfortable. They put on quite good nights for backpackers though, such as a cheese and wine evening, a quiz evening (I didn't do too well!) and a videa night, which was obviously one of my favourites. It is also in a really good location and I have walked nearly everywhere.
I did have a bit of a traumatic start to my week though and had to go to A&E which was a pain. I had been getting really sore legs, lots of cramp and one day shopping they started to swell really bad, had pins and needles and I got a bad headache. I was in Myers at the time, which is like Debenhams and as it was a Saturday thought I would ask the first aid staff if they knew where a medical centre was that might be open. Being a big girl though, I started crying as soon as I asked...I felt a right lemon. They pointed me in the right direction, but the medical centre sent me straight to the hospital, where I had to have injections to thin my blood in my tummy (Janine you are much braver than me!) and tests for Thrombosis, which I don't have. I felt such an idiot. But alls well now, so no worries there!
On Anzac day - which is a memorial service to remember all Auzzies and New Zealanders who have fought in wars - I went to the Memorial service in Hyde Park, which although for a sombre event was spectacular. It is a bank holiday and so many people, young and old, get involved in the rememberance services and parades that happen all over the country. Afterwards I went to Sydney Museum, which was interesting and then I met up with Emily, a really nice girl who is in my dorm. We went for a drink and after chatting with some Vietnam vetrens, got 'chatted up' by some wierdo old chap who was in his 60's and wanted to know when we 'lost it'!?! Needless to say we made a quick escape, though Emily told him we had to meet friends and I said we had to go back to our hostel at the same time!
So what else did I get up to? Well I went on a sight seeing tour bus, that took me to all the most famous sights, as well as out to Bondi Beach, which I was a little disappointed by (it's tiny!); I obviously visited the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge, known as the coat hanger by the locals apparently! I went to the Rocks, Paddington Market, the Blue Mountains (which are actually Blue looking due to the haze given off by the eucalyptus trees), the casino (though I didn't bet) and I went on a lovely boat trip. I met Louise Quy, from school, and went to a little party at her house for St George's Day, which was great fun, especially as she served a traditional English party snack - crispy cakes! I aslo met up with her for dinner one night and we went up to Surry (Not a spelling mistake!) Hills for dinner, which was lovely to catch up and discuss what each others set of friends are now doing amongst other things!
I am definitely sad to be leaving here so soon and would certainly like to come back again though perhaps when it is a bit warmer!
