The nxt day our tour group went to an island called Taquile. It looked similar to Amantani and amazinly beautiful but as we were walking up from the boat, it was completely deserted and I felt like I was in The Odyssey and was about to be eaten by some sort of monster :S. Our tour guide Manuel sat us all down and told us all about the islands customs - which are quite mad. They are sort of like a little communist community and have all these strict rules against lying and being lazy and holding hands in public is not allowed. They are both Catholic and have the traditional Inca religion and divorces arent allowed. To make sure everyone really wants to marry before they do, their wedding ceremony is HORRIBLE. The bride and groom have to kneel on a rock with their hands tied together all day for a WEEK! They cant even go to the loo. We walked all the way up to the top of the island where the main square. I felt like I was in The Crucible in puritan America. The square was almost deserted with a huddle of really suspicious looking locals all wearing black shawls at the edge. We had been told that people had been kicked off the island before for not following the rules - tourists included - so I was a bit uneasy but nothing dramatic happened at all.
After we all explored the island, we all went back to Puno and got on our bus to Cusco. It was a six hour ride and after 2 hours we were all chucked off because of an electrical malfunction :S. We had to get to the bus station and book a seat on the next bus - in an hour. Fortunately we got there just in time and got some of the last seats. The next bus wasnt for a further 3 hours! Eventually we got back to Cusco (after picking up some hitchhiking locals who stood in the isle and glared at everybody and after temporarily leaving a Japanese man at a petrol station by mistake) at 2am. All in all it was an excellent trip :D xxxxxxx
