The End of Queenstown
We decided to leave Queenstown finally, after spending a month there, as Ben, our good friend from Brighton had to move onto fiji as he had literally run out of money (most likely from boozing in Queenstown) and Dan who we have been good friends with too is staying to work here untill october so he will be there for a while anyway. We have also given up the grape picking, after a week, very long days and early mornings and it was so so dull! So with not much to entertain ourselves with in the day, we felt it was time to move on.
The Catlins Coaster
However, we thought we would all four of us go on a road trip around the Catlins - along the south coast on a scenic route with chances to see wildlife. Dan agreed to drive us as he had a licence and a car and we chipped in for petrol. Our first stop off was Invercargill, a town on the south coast, and also the most south you can be ion the south island. We headed out from Queenstown on wednesday at 4.30 and arrived in Invercargill at 7.30. A funny sort of place, not much to do and the streets were completely empty so it looked like a bit of a ghost town. And then we found out that none of the supermarkets sold alcohal which was wierd, and so everything else being shut we stayed in the hostel and played pictionary- what a laugh. So the next day we did the scenic route along the coast and saw spectacular waterfalls in pristine?rainforest and saw hector dolphines in the distance as we drove?on to a clifftop lookout. We also saw sea lions in Surat Bay which was cool, but bloody hell are they big creatures! Pretty scary too, i made sure i stayed well away but the boys werent as?cautios?of me and went right up to a huge one that was?dozing on the beach. But yeah, pretty rough animals.?we also tried to see the rare yellow eyed penguins off of nugget point but it reached darkness quickly so we couldnt?see them very well,?the beach is unavailable to tourists as they are precious animals so we saw from a lookout spot.?At?night we stayed in Dunedin - on the east?coast, stayed in a nice modern hostel and?cooked some dinner, thenm?we played drinking games after that, which was hilarious. We went out about town and?lots of young people were about, which is always a good sign.?Dunedin is known as a student city as students make up 20% of the population. We went to monkey bar which is actually a club converted from a church. Next morning we drove around the Otago Penisula, a short drive from the city, very beautiful too, and we saw some seals on the beach, and this time i got up close as they are only small animals. At the end of the day we dropped Ben off back in Dunedin and said our goodbyes, whilst me, luke and Dan went back to Queenstown. We decided to stay too more nights and leave on Sunday. On our last night we wanted to go out one last time with dan and a couple of girls we met in the hostel and had a blast. We said goodbye to dan.?
