Hi there, Since we arrived in new zealand we have made our way down the west coast of the south island for a week and then arrived in Queenstown - the livliest town on the south island, and 4 weeks on we havnt left! Time goes pretty quick when your travelling. We have met some great people out here and have just been hanging out together, partying, as queenstown is a wicked place for nightlife, having barbeques at our hostel and taking drives out of town as one of our mates dan, has a car. Luke has done a bungee jump too which is pretty incredible, i didnt think he would do it!
Queenstown is a very popular tourist destination, and you get loads of backpackers coming through here every week, alot of people we've met in our hostel are here for the skiing season which?kicks off?in june and july, its amazing how many people are here for it as Queenstown is only a couple of kilometres away from 'the remarkables' a mountain range (which is used in Lorrd of the Rings) where the all the skiing happens, its a pretty amazing view too. But we are due to leave new zealand on may 31 so we wont be here for the snow, which im quite glad for because i dont like the cold! The weather has been good here, when we arrived it was very warm - 18 degrees, but now its getting a little chillier, we still get beautiful sunny days but just not so warm now. You can tell the winter is coming.
So far the south island has been full of national parks, which means theres alot of untouched wilderness, the most beautiful is fiordland national park which is on the south west coast and is almost tropical looking as we drove through on our magic bus, we saw amazing waterfalls and mirror lakes surrounded by lush rainforest. We also went on a cruise to milford sound and saw bottlenose dolphins! That was so cool because these cruises run everyday and they are rarely seen so we were so excited when we saw them swimming our way! We are hoping to see some more wildlife in a few days when we are going to take a short road trip to the catlins which is on the south coast as our mate has two days off from work on 9/10th may so he can drive us. There hopefully we will see wild yellow eyed pengins, sealions and hector dolphins. That will be the last time us four (me, luke, dan and ben) will do anything together as ben, who we met here in our hostel who is from brighton back in the UK is going to fiji then home as he has run out of money, and dan, who we also met from new york is staying here untill october, so me and luke are going to head off again on sun 11th may towards dunedin and then make our way up the south island on the east coast, and then eventually to the north island.
So that is a brief summary of what we have been up to since we arrived in nz, we've also done a week working at a vinyard picking grapes to top up the funds! Will write again soon. Deanna and Luke xxx
