Well here we are in Melbourne ready for a few weeks hard work to save up money for the next part of our trips. We're really excited to be going to a house where we can finally unpack and judging by the internet photos - the house is very lovely......
The taxi must've got it wrong surely?!!! We tried next door but that's been reposessed dammit!!! There was a massive pile of junk on the front lawn, the gate was completely broken and the front window boarded up!! Doh. This is definitely us though the landlord confirms as he answers the door. On the inside it's filthy and freezing and the fires won't work and the doors don't fit. It's all we can do not to collapse laughing as we see more of the house!!! We couldn't look at each other as we knew it would result in either tears of giggle fits - more likely the latter!
Simon's (landlord) mate, Gilly, came over to sort the fire out so at least we'd be warm and then they left us to it.
We spent a good few hours cleaning on our first day in Melbourne and shopping for essentials then Simon dropped by later to check we were ok and drop the bombshell that he'd put our number on the internet for other potential tennants to call, thanks for that Simon!!! Lucy actually got asked on a date by one visitor - err no thanks!!! haha
It got better when Elise from Canada and an English couple, Bonnie and Kit, moved in despite the fact the internet broke as did the hot water and the dvd player and our wardrobe door falls off!!! lol All adds character and there's a really good sofa and trampoline to outway the bad.
The job hunt hasn't gone all that well unfortunately, we had a trial at a cafe - I started at 7am and Lucy at 11am....
I worked for 7 hours to be told at the end it was a free trial so I wouldn't get paid and they'd call me - never did!! I got home to find Lucy annoyed as she'd gone into the city for her trial to be told it was cancelled!! Needless to say we've not recommended that cafe to anyone!
The following day we had an interview for door to door sales of electricity!! What was becoming of us?! We decided to give it a try as we really needed the money and they made it sound dead easy and like a really good offer - they were good at their jobs!!!
We spent a couple of days in training, our second day saw us running way too far for the train having missed the tram! We had to run across the tracks and leap onto the practically moving train, no exaggeration honest. You'll be glad to know we got there in time thankfully. We were then packed off on a roadtrip to Geelong to meet our team and make some sales (or not!).
We found ourselves with a lovely group of boys - Rob, Matt, Cyrille, Mike, Andy and Dave - They really looked after us and were very supportive and encouraging despite our lame sales attempts!! We thought we should at least give it another week before giving up so we went to Wangaratta the next week which was more countrylike than Geelong so would hopefully be easier. It wasn't really but we did get lots of free tea and food (no sales! haha) from potential customers and enjoyed the country pubs obviously. We had a funny night out which involved Matt and Cyrille on the Karaoke!! They missed my song for some reason - their loss! haha. Randomly aswell was a guy doing comicstyle portraits which me and lucy were made to sit for!!
Between us we got 5 sales in 2 weeks so we couldn't really afford to carry on as they take most of that wage for transport and accommodation anyway so we called it a day there as did Andy, Dave, Rob and Matt!!!!
Rob and Matt had the genius idea of selling 'don't knock' stickers so we had a go at that too but we were still rubbish!!! Doh
In order to get motivated, Bonnie decided we should move the trampoline round to the back and have a good bounce, brilliant! We set about the task with the help of Elise and hit an obstacle - the camper van... I stepped up to take the drivers seat and reverse it out of the way but there was just one problem...it wouldn't go into reverse! Doh It was ok though as Lucy, Bonnie and Elise stepped up to push the van out of the way!!! Success as the trampoline was now in a position to be used and the bouncing really did give us renewed enthusiasm and motivation for the job hunt.
I managed to get a part time job at the local bistro and Simon payed us to moved the rubbish off the front lawn. While we were doing that we managed to get ourselves locked out of the house so that was a bit of a drama, funny though!
Naomi has now rejoined us and we've made good friends with Matt and Robs flatmate, vickie from new Zealand.
We went to the Pompeii exhibition at the museum last week which was really interesting and I've been to The Olde Melbourne Gaol where Ned Kelly was hung.
We're saving Neighbours night for when Sally gets here - should be awesome from what we've heard.
