Had a compulsory stopover in 1770. Named so as it was the first spot Captain Cook landed on. We were only there for one night but we saw all the sights, which were the hostel and the garage. Took advantage of the free barbecue and played cards with the other stranded bus passengers.
Arrived at Rainbow beach the next day. The bus driver 'you can call me Pappa' Keith (no thanks Keith) showed us the beach which is stunning. Have the home and away theme tune playing in my head. Rainbow is yet another one horse town! Went for the walk put on by our hostel and met up with the gang we've gathered on the way. No one mentioned this was a 30 minute walk uphill at a pace. None of us have seen anything close to exercise in a long time so it was a lot of effort.
Was worth the 'wow' at the top though. Ended up at what looked like a sandy valley. Got the chance to try out a boomerang and failed. Watched others have a go at sandboarding.
Had another group barbecue courtesy of the public grills by the beach before hitting the goon in our dorms.
Goon: cheap box 'wine'. A friend of the backpacker and park bench dwellers alike.
Our budgets and stories of dingos and freezing cold tents meant we didn't go to Fraser island which is basically the only reason people come to Rainbow. It's a giant island made of sand with freshwater lakes and you get to drive 4x4s on the beach. Next time....
