Lucy's Travels
Thursday 1st February - Spent the day in Dunedin, driving to the tip of the coast to see yellow eyed penguins, sea lions and a castle. What we didnt realise was that you had to pay lots to see all of these things so we didnt bother! Next time I have a picture of a penguin I will just draw yellow circles around its eyes!! We did, though, go to the Cadbury factory. It was very informative and filling! Went to a different camp site and bumped into our friends spending the evening chatting to them.
Friday 2nd February - Made our way to Otego for a quick walk and something to eat and then hit the road towards Timaru. Spent most of the time on the road that day so just had a quiet one.
Saturday 3rd February - Classic car festival on in town but didnt realise the cars were going the same way as us with a max speed of 80km and hour! Mad it to Lake Tekap and had a lovely day taking photos, looking at the view and playing crazy golf. We then drove up the road towards Mount Cook. We didnt drive all the way there but stopped at a viewpoint by a lake called Pukaki. It was really beautiful one of the most spectacular sights yet! We then spent the night in Tekapo (or as I kept calling it 'take-a-poo') and went down by the lake watching the sun go down.
Sunday 4th February - Driving down the highway to Hanmer Springs. About 4 hours in the car so didnt stop a great deal. Hanmer is like a Swiss town, with cosy shops, cafes and a hot spring. In winter it is a popular ski resort but there is not a snow drop in sight right now. It did, however, pour with rain for a solid 10 hours! In these circumstances it is the law to go to the pub.
Monday 5th February - Spent 4 hours in the hot spring pool. We really couldnt get out. They range from 28C to 40c and each pool has a different property. For example, there were the sodium pools, rock pools and the hexagonal pools - lovely. We then drove down highway 70 to Kaikoura.
Tuesday 6th February - Had planned to see the whales today but all trips have been called off due to the strong current! We are hoping to go tomorrow providing the weather is ok, will now spend the rest of the day on the internet and by the beach.
