Woke 8.40 which is late for us. Had coffee and breakfast which we had brought, melon, muesli, and the tillamook yogurt.
Left praire city about 10ish for a long drive of 206 miles. It had been raining overnight and the temp was much cooler around 52f. Drive 66 miles to baker city on the or7 road. The vista was forests and some mountains. The mountains were covered by clouds. It was dry and the drive was along narrow, winding roads following valleys and rivers. The vista changed near baker city to a plateau about 4,000 ft above sea level. Decided to stop at baker city which appeared to be an old cowboy town with lots of original buildings dating from 1889 approx at the time of the gold rush.
Found some lovely shops especially a gift shop which had a nice mixture of local and not so local gifts. Saw a great satchel bag with a picture of Baker city and the mountains behind it. Had to have it for college. It was $35. They also had home made fudge which they make on the premises. Some unusual flavours including maple syrup and carrot cake. Had some tasters (yum yum) and bought half a pound for $7.95. Very friendly local store and staff.
Found another great craft and art store. They had a sale and bought some clear graphic 45 stamps at $2 each. These would be a lot lot more in the uk. Needed some coffee and after walking around went into Charley's for a light bite. Had a lovely sandwich which was about 3inches thick filled with local ham and cheese. Running short of petrol so stopped to fill up. Very friendly petrol guy fills up for you and cleans your screen. He wanted to chat about Brexit. All the Americans appear to want to know our views on it. We counter with asking about trump v Hillary. Various views on that!!!!makes for interesting conversations.
Leave baker city and continue down the I84 to la grande immediately taking a right turn to OR82 and Enterprise. Lots of great views and winding roads. Arrive at enterprise (3000 population approx). A lovely small town. Decide to stop on the Main Street but find not much open. Found a coffee stop called Gipsy Java. It was strange but comfortable seating. Had coffee and scone made with peaches. A few strange characters in there but harmless.
Continued to travel on the final 35 miles through forests and arrived at rim rock inn at about 5pm. Did not realise that the tepees were overlooking a very large canyon called Joseph canyon. Wow wow wow.we got our luggage and settled in the tepee which had a very comfortable futon bed with lots of Indian blankets on top.
Had a meal at the inn which was small but good. Beetroot salad and chicken wrap. Discovered we were the only people staying in the whole of the inn.
We were offered wifi at $10 which we took. No television anywhere,.... we were also given fire wood and items for toasting marshmallows. The owner set the fire for us. The temp was dropping and we were glad of the fire right outside our tent. Wonderful feeling of peace overlooking the canyon toasting marshmallows wrapped up well and cuddled down in bed.
