Had a leisurely start to the day and awoke to lovely weather. Left the artists loft and found a petrol station. Took the 97 and cut across to the 26 at pineville where the views were magnificent and varied. Mountains and high prairie plateaus. There was also forest. The vista were undulating. Decided to stop at the painted hills one of the seven wonders of oregon. Drove down a long track road and arrived at the painted hills. Went down an even more smaller dirt track to pointed cove trail. This was close as close as you could get to the hills and the formations themselves. The lava is like sand. You are asked not to walk on the hills as your feet would leave permenant tracks. Some stupid people had done that. The view around is very mars like with the pink colour coming from 35 million years ago when the land was wetter. You really had a sense of history and time here. All you could do was look and wonder. We walked the rail and then drove to the main overlook. This is the painted hills that you see pictured. Long undulating hills with layers of pink. I have never seen anything quite like it. We sat and took pictures and could on,y say that it was yet another great vista. Left the painted hills and drive back to the main road. Needed a coffee / lunch stop so stopped at Mitchell. Originally drove through a very one horse town. Took leases than a minute. Very ramshackle and not very nice. Outside of the town was a coffe place which looked a bit better. Stopped there. There was a few people in there. Ordered a lit bite of mac n cheese and strips of chicken. Waited almost 45 minutes and when it came it was all fried balls!!! Felt a bit sick after eating all that fat but was hungry. Continued on until we came to a town called Dayville. Full of pretty houses, manicured lawns. The contrast between this town is poles apart from Mitchell which was very run down and dilapated. Stopped and walked to a gift shop selling some unique home made gifts and umpqua ice cream. Had a double cone ice cream and sat by the town hall eating it, this was the smallest town hall I have very seen. Smaller than my craft work shop. Took a picture of Martin outside of it. Saw a lot of turkey vultures circling around. A lovely stop and a lovely town. Left Dayville 3pm and continued the journey to Praire City. High up in the mountains and quite remote. Arrived about 4.30 and checked in. Our room was small and rustic but the bed looked comfortable. We had a walk around the towns Main Street and bought some food as you make your own breakfast. Also bought a microwave meal as no where open for food. Realised that our hotel is a pokostop!!! Yeahhhh.
The microwave meals were truly awful. Went into the bar and spent a couple of hours nursing local deschutes beer form bend. Went back to the room watching TVs including the end of Forrest Gump. A good travelling day and wonderful views of the painted hills.
