Started day with a great breakfast. American pancakes, fruit and slice of Canadian bacon yum. We had booked an hour whale watching on a zodiac rib boat. There would be six of us in total. It leaves from the harbour beneath the hotel at 10. The weather is overcast and much cooler. Put on a top, fleece and windproof mac. Glad i did as it was windy and cold out there.
We went out the narrow harbour entrance. It is meant to be the worlds smallest harbour. Saw a seal near the enterence. Captain laird brought his dog who looked as though he would go overboard but didnt.
We all wore life jackets.
It was not long before we sighted whale blows (spouts) loads of them. There were dozens of califorian grey whales all around us. These are smaller than humpback whales we saw in san francisco being 45 foot in length. We got so close that we were able to smell them. Very fishy!
Soon we saw them breaching and lots of whale tails. Absolutely magical. So many all around.Lots of pictures. Soon the hour was up and back in the harbour saw a blue heron on the mooring. Walked up to depoe bay to get a well warmed coffee and cinnamon toast. This was made with cinnamon swirl bread. Very sugary and just what i needed after the boat trip. The shops in depoe bay are not up to much. The usual seaside gifts. Went and watched more whales very close to shore. You could see their bodies under the water. Apparently depoe bay has an extremely deep channel near to shore. Went to the whale watching centre. They had a powerful telescope linked to a camera showing the whales. I felt lucky and privileged to have seen them. Bought a teeshirt.
Back in the car we made our way back to lincoln city stopping at depoe bakery and a few antique and collectable shops.bought some music boxes. Found the fused glass place but not much there.
Stopped at Taft which is part of lincoln city. The bay was called siletz bay. A lovely long beach with lots of very big driftwood trees bleached whiteon the foreshore.
Needed food so stopped off at Mo’s Restaurant for a hot dog and ice cream. Walked the beach enjoying the hot sunshine. About 74f. Could see whales spouting by the surf line. Then spotted loads of seals on the sand spit. People were having bbq on the beach using the driftwood as fuel. There were fishermen using small boats to catch fish. The channel of water has a fierce current.
Got back to the car as lots of walking on soft sand very tiring. Back to depoe bay for some downtime. Booked in at Restaurant Beck For a meal at 8.30. Arrived early and had a glass of oregon merlot. Martin had beer
Got some seats by the window but too dark for the view. I ordered steak and martin had clam chowder soup and linguine with all sorts of fish. At last i have some decent veg with the meat.
We shared a dessert. Caramel apples very nice. Back to the hotel for some well earned sleep.
