Checked out of rose river b and b. Another great breakfast but far too much. Saw a humming bird last night. Loved the b and b and astoria. We set off to travel over the astoria megler bridge. The bridge is long and stunning. The views from the bridge were fabulous. Up the river and out to the pacific. We passed from oregon to washington state near the end of the bridge. I am driving as i feel very comfortable on the roads. Martin is navigating. No rows yet !!!
From the bridge we travelled through much smaller roads to cape disappointment. Very small towns and lots of forest. Travelled around 25 miles round trip. Arrived at cape disappointment and trekked 1.2 miles there and back through thick forests. Temperature is hot again in the seventies. Saw a chipmunk!! So small.
Arrived at the cape where the cape disappointment lighthouse stood. Very small lighthouse but fabulous views over the pacific oceon. Worth the detour. Very clear air and sense of peace.
Followed our steps back and passed astoria bridge heading towards seaside on the 101 pacific coast highway. Passed through seaside which looked like a usa paignton!!! The highway took us to cannon beach. This was a bit like a small astoria with two main streets and lots of small shops, galleries, eateries etc. We walked to the beach which was huge and looked similar to hayle. Four miles of Golden sands. The water was cold and no one was swimming in the water. We headed towards haystack rock which is a famous landmark on the water line. This rock featured in the goonies film apparently. It is huge and very beautiful but a long walk along the sand.
We cut inland and walked back to canon beach town. Found a lovely quilting and material shop and craft shops. Very hot now and around 2.30 so stopped at an ice cream shop selling tillamock ice cream. I had marionberry/ vanilla and martin marionberry sorbet. Yum yum. Found a grocery store and got some fruit and water. Had grapes from oregon. Very sweet.
Needed to get going as latest check in 6 pm. Martin phoned as we would be late.
The road passed through some interesting towns and finally arrived at Depoe bay. One road through and the sea on one side.
The hotel is right on the smallest harbour in usa. A bit like a very mini paignton harbour. All the rooms in the hotel are facing the harbour. The harbour has mostly small pleasure boats. Our room is at the bottom with a veranda through large patio doors facing the harbour. Complimentary chocs and sherry. Great. Met our neighbours who are american. Very friendly. Have not met any brits yet.
A short walk to the main road and found the whale watching centre. The sun was setting and was the most magnificent red over the water. Suddenly saw some plumes from whales. There was at least six and one very close to the shore. Stayed for half an hour watching whale tails as well. So magical...
Had some food at the sea hag. Martin had clam chowder and king prawns. I had cod and chips.
Made our way back on what had been yet another stunning day.
Going whale watching tomorrow.
