- Up at 7:00 am, had some breakfast (the fruit we purchased yesterday), and ready to go. Checked out and into our booked car all very smoothly.
- Drive to Dream World (1hr 45 min) went "smoothly" (notwithstanding the bumpy highways). Speed limit is 120 and it certainly feels fast given the road conditions. I had allowed for 2.5 hrs as wasn't sure of traffic, but was quick.
- While we were 30 min early, worked out well as international information centre was open so we could get sorted and sort out our baggage (as we had large suitcases with us). All went smoothly & were able to go straight in (like 15 min before opening time).
- The park is larger than it looked on the map, and as expected long and narrow.
- This was a similar experience to other places with the whole park very empty to start but build up over 3 hours or so. It also turned out that our tickets had access to everything, including snow world!
- We started out with The indoor roller coaster (I think we were their first visitors of the day), it wasn't that good, pitch black the entire time, rough and not that exciting, glad we did it - but didn't go back. Ethan also observed the lack of emergency exits… We were then the first ones to go on the bumper cars.
- The outdoor roller coaster was better, but quite rough (when compared to the universal ones), but we had a few goes and it was good.
- We had a lot of fun on the bumper cars & went on them heaps. Also did the tornado (giant swing, just like the goliath at adventure world). Had a lot of fun moving around these rides.
- Then went to Snow Town. Was very surreal going into a snow area where could make snow balls & toboggan in Bangkok! It was also freezing in shorts (having just been soaked on another ride). Fortunately they provided a jacket.
- Weather was perfect all day, hot as usual but not unbearable. Park has a lot of shade and heaps of seating (like many hundreds of tables and chairs not being used). There are also misting fans everywhere & rides where you get wet.
- The log ride into the water was impressive & made for a huge splash. The third time we did it Ethan waited on the cross-over bridge to get soaked by the next ride. There was also a river rapids ride, was good to see they seemed to have an extra safety barrier below water given the ride and park name… although other less important safety features were not great (i.e. the seatbelt they insisted be put on would just pop back of again if any force was applied at-all!).
- There were a couple of shows. The Hollywood action, Ethan really liked (very similar idea to the Water World show at Universal). The 4D movie wasn't quite to the same standard as others we've seen but wasn't bad (seats didn't move, but all the other effect and lighting use). Also went to an Alien encounter scene Ethan found quite freaky (there were a lot of seat "effects" in this).
- During the day we likened the rides, and used them, like being laundered - Splash ride get soaked, then went on a spinning shaking ride (that was incredibly loud) that felt like being in a washing machine.. Then the Tornado swing ride to dry off.
- We did a heap of rides in the morning and had lunch (included in our ticket) at an Indian food buffet. I took my chances and tired just about everything, and nothing was too hot (a risk as the place was full of Indians, and though they may cater to authentic spice, it was toned down).
- We spent the afternoon on more rides and decided to leave a bit early (5:15 pm) to get to our hotel (a bit over 1 hr drive). As we walked out they walked up with a photo of us on a plate! (we knew it would happen as we went to the locker earlier in the day and same thing happened). This was incredibly "slick" - i.e. they had it pre-printed and just had it in their hand as if waiting all day for you to show up! We didn't have to buy it (and they were not pushy), but we decided to get the plate, it was only $8 (there was some other thing I don't know what it was so didn't get this).
- Everything in the park was very well-priced and clearly targeted at a Thai audience. There were plenty of options for food well under $5.
- The park was well done, with heaps of street entertainment and a lot of themed areas (From the Hobbit area to the upside-down house, to a House, and possibly a hundred other odd things all over the place).
- It felt a bit bad as the local tickets had limited rides, but the international traveller ones are unlimited (I just brought from the only site that sold them 1 day prior as it turns out meant to book at least 1 day in advance, i.e. I should have booked Friday for Sunday & impossible to buy from the venue direct).
- We used Grab to get to the hotel. Traffic flowed okay to start with but got busier as we got closer to the city. It's interesting that they have double-layer roads (i.e., a highway propped from the middle runs above the original road below).
- Checked into the hotel, is an older building and not so well designed when it comes to getting in! Grab driver had to drop us on the road (there is no drop-off point) with tuk-tuks, car/taxis, scooters, and markets all sharing the space.. So quite a chaotic scene with a lot of whistling (from traffic warden trying to make the chaos flow). Access is via stairs so need to, carry the suitcases up.
- Once we got to our room, what a view! We're on level 73 (and have access to the public viewing areas, including a rotating platform on level 84). We watched the subset with lightning in the distance from the room - was spectacular. Got a free drink as part of check-in from level 83 bar, then went to the rotating lookout.
- Getting around the upper floors was crazy, probably because it was sunset and there are a number of restaurants up the top and it was 7 pm! Get ushered between lifts, which at times stop due to being overweight (on one trip, one person found they could just get off and back on again, and then the alarm stops…).
- The restaurants in the building in one case was booked out, and the other was very expensive (very fancy also), so we headed out into Bangkok! There are sprawling markets at the bottom of the building, although there was no food options amongst these. We looked around a bit and found heaps of Indian options, a few questionable roadside options, so in desperation for indoor A/C and something we could eat went to Maccas (which getting in proved a bit of a challenge as the entry was surrounded with markets). The sizes seem to be more US-focused with huge helpings, we accidently ordered way too much. Service was appalling, but we got our food in the end, and were in AC and had seats, so we couldn't complain.
- As we left, we noticed there was another MacDonalds diagonally opposite the same intersection!
- Was good to walk through a bit of Bangkok, a lot of people, and a lot of markets kind of everywhere. But felt safe and were not hassled excessively (just the odd tuk-tuk driver asking if we wanted a lift). Only saw 1 cannabis outlet…
- Back at the hotel, writing this, it is interesting to be able to look out the window and watch the massive bustling city below.
- Off to Siam Amazing park tomorrow.
